Blue Cubed
Blue Cubed builds high-performance optical communication terminals for next-generation space links—space-to-space, space-to-ground, and beyond. We’re pushing the limits of lasercom technology while making it practical and easy to use: Ethernet in, photons out. We’re looking for a hands‑on engineer who thrives at the intersection of electronics, firmware, and photonics.
If firing up a spectrum analyzer feels as natural as git rebase, and you can jump from a soldering iron to Python REPL to aligning a camera sensor, you’ll fit right in.
Position Overview We’re hiring a
practical, detail‑oriented Electrical/Embedded Systems Engineer
to design, build, and test the electronics that power our optical terminals. You’ll own schematics and layout, bring boards to life with C/C++ and Python on embedded Linux, and close the loop between hardware and software in real‑time systems.
At Blue Cubed, we value
T‑shaped engineers : people with deep expertise in one or more areas, but the curiosity and flexibility to contribute across disciplines. On a small team, that adaptability is essential—one day you might be debugging a high‑speed PCB, the next writing a Python test harness, and the next debugging a control loop.
What You’ll Do
Design analog & digital electronics: schematic capture, part selection, and PCB layout using professional tools (Altium, KiCad, or equivalent).
Bring‑up & debug: power sequencing, interfaces (SPI/I2C/UART/LVDS), high‑speed links, signal integrity, and board‑level troubleshooting.
Embedded software: develop and maintain C/C++ (and Python tooling) on Linux‑based platforms; write drivers, HALs, and test utilities.
Integrate real‑time systems: sensors, actuators, motor/voice‑coil controllers, and embedded compute modules.
Photonics & optics: interface with cameras, detectors, and basic optical components as part of system integration.
Lab work: use scopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, and power supplies; create repeatable test plans and verification procedures.
Collaboration: work closely with mechanical, systems, and software teams to ensure robust HW/SW integration.
Productization: support builds from prototype through production; maintain BOMs, ECNs, and disciplined revision control.
Quality focus: apply SI/PI, grounding, and EMI/EMC best practices; contribute to design reviews and documentation.
Required Qualifications
Degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering (or related) or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years
designing embedded electronics and systems.
Deep experience with at least one PCB design tool (Altium, KiCad, or equivalent).
Experience with circuit simulation tools such as SPICE or equivalent.
Proficiency in
C/C++
for embedded Linux;
Python
for test, tooling, and automation.
Hands‑on debugging with oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, and bench equipment.
Solid understanding of
signal integrity , power distribution/grounding, and
EMI/EMC
fundamentals.
Proficiency with Git
(branching, merging, disciplined revision control workflows).
U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency (Green Card) required.
Excellent documentation, ownership, and teamwork.
Self‑motivated and adaptable; thrives in a small, fast‑moving team.
Preferred Qualifications
Control systems, feedback loops, motor/voice‑coil control, or precision motion experience.
Knowledge of orbit determination and attitude estimation techniques.
FPGA/HDL exposure (e.g., SPI/I2C controllers, simple DSP blocks, SERDES bring‑up).
Familiarity with photonics, cameras, and basic optics.
Experience in startups, aerospace/defense, or hardware products with environmental testing (vibe/thermal/EMI).
Why Blue Cubed?
Work on cutting‑edge optical comms with real mission impact.
Join a sharp, collaborative team that ships hardware.
Flexible, hybrid work in beautiful Lafayette, Colorado.
Help shape the culture and trajectory of a fast‑growing space company.
Salary: $110,000–$135,000, depending on experience.
Equity/stock options.
Flexible hours and hybrid work options.
Generous PTO and holidays.
Health, dental, and vision insurance.
Professional development and conference support.
