General Description The Consumer Protection Division of the Texas Office of the Attorney General seeks a licensed attorney to join the Special Enforcement Team as Assistant Attorney General I-III. The role is based in Austin, Dallas, or San Antonio. Responsibilities include planning and coordinating investigations into high‑profile consumer protection matters, issuing civil investigative demands, taking pre‑suit depositions of well‑represented opponents, navigating privilege and other defenses asserted during investigations, and driving fast‑paced investigations with news‑worthy implications.

Essential Position Functions Assistant Attorney General I responsibilities:

Analyze complex factual and legal issues and develop evidence through witness interviews, undercover operations, examinations under oath, depositions, requests to examine, civil investigative demands, and other discovery.

Represent the Office of the Attorney General and other state agencies before state and federal district and appellate courts in charitable trust and civil enforcement cases pursuant to the Texas Business Organizations Code, Texas Trust Code, the Deceptive Trade Practices Act and other privacy and technology related consumer protection laws.

Perform all phases of civil litigation of consumer protection cases, including drafting petitions, motions, pleadings, orders, briefs, discovery, and memoranda; prepare cases for trial.

Prepare legal opinions, memoranda, briefs, pleadings, motions, petitions, and other legal documents.

Participate in administrative hearings and evidentiary hearings and in the discovery process.

Perform legal research and investigations; report findings and conclusions.

Advises management on factual and legal issues.

Assist in drafting bills and amendments for legislative consideration.

Provide technical guidance to less tenured staff and train others.

Maintain knowledge of legal principles and practices relevant to Consumer Protection.

Maintain a low to medium volume of litigation cases and investigations.

Maintain confidentiality of all case‑related matters.

Communicate with representatives of state agencies and consumers.

Perform related work as assigned.

Attend work regularly in compliance with the agreed‑upon work schedule.

Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information.

Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity.

Assistant Attorney General II and III responsibilities include all the above functions plus:

Maintain a medium to high volume of litigation cases and investigations.

Qualifications Minimum qualifications for Assistant Attorney General I:

Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree (J.D.).

Licensed as an attorney by the State Bar of Texas and in good standing.

Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines.

Skill in legal research, writing, and analysis; conducting investigations; mediation and negotiations; using reasoning and logic; identifying and solving complex problems; prioritizing workloads; using judgment to identify courses of action; and using a computer and applicable software.

Skill in working under pressure and cooperatively with other attorneys, supervisors, investigators, and support staff.

Skill in effective oral and written communication.

Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making.

Knowledge of law and legal principles, practices, and proceedings; and of state and federal laws, regulations, and rules.

Ability to prepare legal documents, conduct research, interpret and apply laws, summarize findings, prepare cases and present at trial, conduct hearings and communicate effectively.

Ability to handle stressful situations.

Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback.

Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment.

Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG work space within OAG work location, and perform in‑person work with coworkers for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave).

Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business‑related travel.

Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA.

Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.

Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 20%.

Assistant Attorney General II qualifications add one year of full‑time experience as a licensed attorney working in Texas Business Organizations Code, Texas Trust Code, consumer protection, or commercial litigation.

Assistant Attorney General III qualifications add two years of full‑time experience as a licensed attorney working in Texas Business Organizations Code, Texas Trust Code, consumer protection, or commercial litigation.

Preferred Qualifications

Focus on consumer protection and/or commercial litigation subjects.

Experience with electronic document review platforms including Relativity and programs such as Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and Word.

Experience working in corporation law, nonprofit law, charitable trusts, consumer protection, commercial litigation, or civil litigation.

Knowledge of relevant consumer protection statutes.

Legal research and writing experience; experience with document review platforms.

Proven ability to lead others and work within a larger organization.

Ability to proficiently read, write, and speak Spanish.
