Head of Strategic Risk, Risk Appetite & Identification Location: Minneapolis, MN | Salary: $214,795.00 - $252,700.00

We’re seeking a visionary leader to serve as

Head of Strategic Risk, Risk Appetite & Identification —a pivotal role that blends strategic foresight, and risk expertise.

Reporting directly to the

Chief Operational Risk Officer

and

Head of Enterprise Risk Management , this senior executive will architect and lead a forward-thinking risk framework that aligns with the bank’s strategic ambitions and regulatory expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the development and execution of the bank’s Strategic Risk Management Framework, integrating with enterprise strategic planning and change management processes.

Oversee the identification, assessment, and monitoring of strategic and concentration risks, including emerging risks, mergers & acquisitions, equity investments, and capital expenditures.

Ensure strategic risks are effectively identified, measured, controlled and monitored across the enterprise and are aligned with the company’s risk appetite and concentration limits.

Direct the enterprise Risk Appetite and Identification Program, including annual assessments, quarterly updates, and integration with other risk programs.

Ensure key risks (including top-of-mind, emerging risk and materials risks) are appropriately identified, quantified and controlled and incorporated into stress testing.

Ensure risk appetite is defined and appropriately calibrated across the company with clear linkage to the company’s strategy and concentrations limits.

Oversee the development and monitoring including leading and lagging metrics to ensure compliance with risk appetite and fit-for-purpose actions are undertaken to remedy risk appetite or concentration limit breaches.

Oversee the development and implementation of systems and platforms for risk identification and reporting.

Develop insightful reporting on strategic risk, concentration risk, risk appetite and risk identification including regular reporting to Executive Risk Committee and the Board.

Ensure all risk management activities meet regulatory expectations and internal governance standards.

Leadership & Collaboration

Strong collaboration skills and ability to influence across all levels of the organization.

Manage and develop a high-performing team of risk professionals, providing guidance, performance management, and training.

Lead cross-functional and cross-risk category working groups, fostering collaboration and alignment across the organization.

Serve as a trusted advisor and credible challenger to senior leaders on strategic initiatives and risk mitigation strategies.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

Degree in Risk Management, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or related field.

15+ years in risk management, with preferred experience in financial and non-financial risks.

Deep understanding of strategic risk management frameworks and methodologies.

Experience in integrating risk management with enterprise strategic planning and change management.

Strong knowledge of concentration risk principles, including risk aggregation and limit setting.

Ability to assess and monitor exposures across business lines and risk types.

Proficiency in developing and interpreting leading and lagging risk metrics. Familiarity with stress testing and scenario analysis.

Strong understanding of regulatory expectations related to enterprise risk management.

Experience presenting to executive committees and boards.

Experience implementing systems/platforms for risk identification and reporting.

Ability to produce insightful, executive-level risk reporting.

Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence senior stakeholders.

Strong collaboration skills across business lines, enabling functions, and risk domains.

Deep familiarity with banking or financial services industry, including regulatory frameworks and enterprise risk governance.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex risk concepts into actionable insights for senior leadership.
