The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is the nation's leading cancer advocacy organization. Together with our charitable partner, the American Cancer Society, we work in Congress, state legislatures and local jurisdictions to support evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.
The State & Local Story Outreach fellowship program is an exciting one-year opportunity to work directly with the ACS CAN State & Local Campaigns team on advocacy campaigns nationwide. The Fellow will also have the opportunity to work collaboratively with multiple teams across ACS and ACS CAN to produce storytelling products that clearly advocate for national campaign priorities. The Story Outreach Fellow will join a team of people supporting the collection and vetting of stories that are integrated into state and local policy change campaigns. The story collection efforts are part of the ongoing campaign strategy and also help with efforts to build our grassroots volunteer network in all 50 states.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assists with building the ACS CAN Storybank across issue areas through training, support and technical assistance in identifying, interviewing and engaging storytellers.
Develops strategies to increase use of the ACS CAN Storybank including training staff, documenting processes, and analyzing and reporting data to appropriate staff.
Engages in strategic conversations with state staff to best identify opportunities to highlight the stories of people with lived experiences in order to better educate an advocate for ACS CAN’s mission priorities.
Research and documents best practices in outreach strategies for volunteer storyteller engagement and track implementation and outcomes within ACS CAN.
Documents and implements successful strategies for volunteer storyteller engagement, outreach, training on advocacy related issues, story collection, and collateral development.
Develops outreach products that support the federal, state, and local advocacy story banking - including storybooks, videos, one pager, share graphics, and other materials.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Degree Required: Associate degree
Preferred Degree: Bachelor's Degree
Years of experience: 0-3 years
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY
Bachelor’s degree or demonstrated education/experience in social work, public health, and/or health policy.
Strong writing and communication skills.
Advocacy campaign or community organizing experience.
Basic knowledge of health access issues and/or programs and initiatives available to low-income individuals and families.
Ability to juggle multiple initiatives at the same time.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to travel (by car and/or airplane) as needed.
Ability to complete work deliverables while traveling.
The starting rate is $25-$35/hour. The final candidate’s relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education.
