About The Position
Gryphon House, Inc., an award-winning publisher of early childhood resource books and subsidiary of Kaplan Early Learning Company, seeks an Editor to join its team. Reporting to the Executive Editor, the candidate will have experience in print publishing, with particular skills in content development, copyediting, and proofreading. The candidate will be articulate, flexible, patient, and tenacious, thriving in a high job-volume environment.
Position Responsibilities
Participate in planning and executing assigned projects and making creative suggestions that reflect an understanding of the early childhood education marketplace and an awareness of customer needs.
Rely on guidance from the direct supervisor to ensure that the evolving product meets the objectives of the plan, budget, and schedule, including specs, writing guidelines, and project audience.
Edit manuscript content to meet the needs of customers/readers.
Nurture author relationships with tact and patience.
Monitor appropriateness of text material as to level of difficulty, content accuracy and currency, and freedom from bias.
Possess a working knowledge of copyediting and proofreading so that he or she can review the work of freelance copyeditors and proofreaders.
Participate with the design and production team in cover and interior design development.
Participate in staff and editorial meetings.
Attend early childhood conferences as requested.
Work with freelance staff on a limited basis to complete assigned projects.
Proofread marketing materials as needed.
Support the author acquisition process through research, networking, and initial interviews.
Education / Experience
BA/BS degree (preferably in journalism, English, or communication) required.
Certification from an editorial-training program or equivalent combination of education and experience (3-5 years of editorial experience in book publishing) preferred.
Experience in early childhood education is a plus.
Must have a thorough understanding of the editorial and book- or magazine-production processes, including developmental editing, the levels of copyediting, proofreading, fact checking, idea generation, and coordination and trafficking of manuscripts through the publishing process.
Knowledge and experience with content development and editing is a must.
Must be a quick learner and flexible thinker with an ability to problem solve.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, time-management, and organizational skills required.
Excellent command of English spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style, 18th ed., preferred.
Should be comfortable juggling several projects concurrently and enjoy working collaboratively with other departments (e.g., design, marketing) to deliver high-quality products on time and within budget. Able to respond quickly in an environment of changing priorities.
Ability to meet deadlines and work professionally under pressure.
Proficient user of Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.
Ability to travel up to 4 times a year.
