Responsibilities

Provides physician and psychiatric consultation to program staff relating to patient treatment.

Performs initial assessment of assigned new patients within 24 hours of admission. Completes physician assessment and management orders. Assessment includes assignment to appropriate level of care.

Completes admission notes within 48 hours of the patient’s admission.

Provides psychiatric evaluations and consultations within the appropriate timeframe.

Gathers necessary information from patients including history, psychiatric evaluation and diagnoses, and documents information in accordance with system rules and regulations/policy and procedure.

Attends to the patient’s medical needs by arranging appropriate consultations and/or transfers to appropriate medical facilities. Enters the appropriate documentation in the patient’s record.

Orders appropriate lab studies and follows-up on lab findings.

Reviews all diagnostic and treatment/consult reports and documents in patient record according to policy.

Documents any patient problems and continuously updates.

Prescribes medications and provides medication education, monitoring and management. Explains benefits and risks/side effects to patient.

Documents in patient medical record patient’s progress toward treatment plan goals and interventions and treatments provided.

Participates in the TRC psychiatric on‑call roster. Responds promptly to calls as needed.

Demonstrates knowledge and understanding the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and application of steps to a recovery program.

Demonstrates on a consistent basis the ability to assess the symptoms and effects of physical, emotional and sexual abuse and neglect.

Demonstrates on a consistent basis the ability to determine the patient’s risk of danger to self and others.

Able to obtain and interpret information about the patient’s history of dependence/psychiatric disorder, recognizing the biopsychosocial symptoms and progression of dependency/disorder, and the effects of the chemical dependency and psychiatric disorders on the patient.

Consults regularly with primary therapists, family therapists, nurses, and other clinical staff regarding treatment planning and monitoring issues.

Is prompt for and regularly attends and actively participates in patient staffing/treatment team meetings.

Effectively and promptly performs internal utilization reviews as requested by Medical Director, Utilization Review Director, Clinical Services Director, or Director of Risk/PI.

Maintains chart documentation which supports patient’s clinical need for admission, continued stay, discharge and level of care.

Effectively and accurately conducts utilization management phone calls to certify patient admission and continued stay in a timely manner.

Adheres to TRC approved utilization criteria for all levels of care and services.

Provides timely and accurate reporting of services or codes and accurate completion of medical documents which support the charges for such services and codes.

Education and Experience

Georgia licensed M.D.

ASAM certification preferred

Familiarity in treating patients with mental illness and chemical dependency

Board eligible or board certified
