Senior Project Manager / Civil Engineer – Land Development
Location: Hauppauge, NY (Hybrid office)
Overview VHB’s growing Hauppauge, NY office is seeking a Senior Project Manager (Civil Engineer) to lead and manage high‑profile, complex projects across multiple sectors, including institutional development, sustainable coastal engineering, shoreline resiliency, transportation‑related access/roadway work, site development, grading, drainage, utility layout/services, and permitting/approvals.
Responsibilities
Lead and develop site/civil engineering plans and specifications for a multitude of projects
Help build and lead a multi‑dimensional team of civil engineering professionals
Provide technical and career guidance as a mentor to staff
Manage medium to large multi‑disciplined projects for both public and private clients
Provide input to Market Leads for Institutional, Real Estate, Transportation, and Energy Markets
Develop new project opportunities, maintain client relations, and manage proposal submissions
Prepare workload projections and track project financial performance
Prepare and review design drawings, specifications, and permitting documents
Lead meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, boards, utility providers, and stakeholders
Administer VHB’s quality program and reviews for project deliverables
Supervise design team activities during Construction Administration/Support Services
Skills and Attributes
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Proficient in civil site layout, local roadway design, grading/drainage, utility design, and erosion/sediment control
Experience with real estate projects, institutional, transportation, and energy projects a plus
A basic understanding of the need for land survey, traffic engineering, geotechnical engineering, and site investigation and remediation, as supporting disciplines to projects
Excellent coaching and mentoring skills
Self‑motivated critical thinker
Exhibits leadership and project management skills
Excels working in an integrated service team environment
Attention to detail
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field required
Master’s degree a plus (may substitute for 1 year of experience)
11‑15+ years of professional civil design engineering experience required
Professional Engineer (PE) licensure required
A local knowledge and understanding of working on Long Island a plus
Experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil3D, and/or MicroStation
Experience managing client relationships and overseeing end‑to‑end project delivery across multiple accounts
Salary Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Hauppauge, NY is $138,000‑178,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
