Senior R&D Engineer – Vascular Access Salt Lake City, Utah

Overview The R&D team at BD Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) is seeking a highly skilled engineer to design, develop, and validate innovative medical devices for the vascular access market. The successful candidate will work in a Salt Lake City R&D laboratory, collaborating with cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑quality disposable and durable devices.

Responsibilities

Lead cross‑functional design control activities and ensure regulatory compliance.

Initiate and manage project deliverables, including development of work breakdown structures, schedules, budgets, and resource plans.

Develop and approve engineering protocols, test methods, and reports; oversee testing and validation activities.

Provide technical support on components, materials, systems, and equipment, including troubleshooting and problem analysis.

Execute design controls, conduct complaint investigations, and manage design and production change activities.

Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation; coordinate with suppliers and internal stakeholders.

Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with global teams on engineering trade‑offs and product roadmap.

Participate in project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and tracking; contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Prepare any required training materials and support training execution for new processes or products.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or related STEM field (Master’s preferred); 4–6 years of medical device R&D experience.

Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, Creo) and analysis tools (FEA, DOE, Minitab); experience with 21CFR820.30 regulations.

Strong project management skills: ability to maintain schedules, budgets, and quality objectives.

Excellent written and oral communication; proven ability to lead cross‑functional teams.

Experience with manufacturing processes such as injection molding, stamping, and assembly; knowledge of contact and non‑contact metrology.

Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulatory and quality requirements in product design and development.

Travel up to 10 %; requires 4 work days on site (Mon‑Thu) and 1 remote day (Fri).

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in STEM and 2–3 years of R&D experience.

Experience with clinical study design and human physiology simulations.

Proficiency in additional programming languages (Python, MATLAB) and advanced statistical methods.

Prior exposure to BD’s Product Development Ecosystem and SD (Software Development) processes.

Physical Demands The role is situated in a laboratory environment. Duties include sitting, standing, and performing general office functions. Occasional lifting up to 25 lb may be required. Employees should be able to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive motions such as bending, stooping, and reaching.
