Department Overview The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is integral to the healthcare, education, and research missions at OHSU. We provide clinical services at OHSU hospitals and collaborate with the Veterans Affairs Portland Health Care System, Hillsboro Medical Center, and Adventist Health. We specialize in providing excellent perioperative care and anesthesia services using state‑of‑the‑art technology with an emphasis on patient safety. Our team includes anesthesiology intensivists, critical care fellows, physician associates, nurse practitioners, and residents. We offer accredited fellowships in Pediatric Anesthesiology, Adult Critical Care, Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Regional Anesthesia, Pain Medicine, and a non‑accredited fellowship in Neuroanesthesia.

Function / Duties of Position The Program Director is a 0.125 FTE leadership role responsible for full program administration, recruitment, selection, education, and compliance. The Director reports to the Vice Chair of Education and collaborates with department Vice Chairs. The Director directs the fellowship Associate/Assistant Program Director and oversees all participating sites.

Responsibilities

Ensure all sites maintain a learning environment conducive to fellow education, adhering to DEIB principles.

Maintain ACGME accreditation and compliance with all core competencies and ACGME rules.

Maintain affiliation agreements and oversight at each training site.

Provide leadership and oversight of fellow formative assessment and summative evaluation processes and ensure compliance with institutional grievance and due process procedures.

Oversee development and implementation of the program curriculum and monitor training progression and didactic quality.

Ensure compliance with Clinical Education and Work hour policies.

Monitor and ensure appropriate supervision of fellows at all sites.

Facilitate educational excellence and innovation, including developing and implementing innovative curriculum and programs.

Attend all OHSU GME meetings or assign a substitute representative.

Maintain scholarship productivity with bi‑annual national presentation or publication related to GME.

Hold leadership positions in education‑focused institutional, national, or international committees or societies.

Directly supervise and support professional development of the fellowship Assistant/Associate Program Director.

Work collaboratively with education administrative leadership to manage all administrative aspects of the fellowship.

Select, mentor, and evaluate program teaching faculty, rotation directors, and site directors at each training site.

Ensure program policies and practices comply with House Officer Union contract.

Ensure all accreditation, compliance, and GME mandatory reports are submitted accurately and timely.

Monitor faculty compliance for timely submission of fellowship performance evaluations.

Lead fellowship recruitment and selection process.

Maintain all required documentation and record‑keeping for the program, learners, and faculty.

Support departmental and division strategic planning efforts.

Attend select in‑person department events and activities such as the winter mixer, graduation, summer picnic, state of the department address, department photo, and in‑person grand rounds.

Qualifications

Doctorate of medicine or osteopathy and residency training in Anesthesiology.

Oregon Medical Board license, appropriate OHSU medical staff appointment, and specialty board certification through the ABA and participation in MOCA.

Current certification in pediatric anesthesiology through the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Minimum of three years post‑pediatric anesthesiology fellowship experience, with demonstrated ongoing academic achievements and a commitment to devote at least 50% of clinical, educational, administrative, and academic time to pediatric anesthesiology.

Faculty experience with demonstrated competence in patient care and teaching, and organizational and administrative qualifications to function effectively within institutional governance.

Significant academic achievements in anesthesiology and medical education, including recent and ongoing publications, education program development, and/or education‑focused research.

Expertise to evaluate program faculty and approve continued participation of program faculty; monitor resident supervision at all sites and conduct accurate, timely preparation and submission of all ACGME information.

Excellent communication skills and professionalism in interactions with ACGME representatives, OHSU GME office, direct reports, and trainees.
