Purpose
Plan, organize, and direct the work of the Technical Services Department. This includes overseeing acquisitions, collection development, serials, electronic resources, cataloging, and processing and repair of all library materials. Ensure that appropriate materials of all types are acquired and properly processed in a well-organized, efficient, and timely manner so that they are available to the faculty, students, and other users of the library. Ensure that the work of Technical Services is coordinated with other library units and supports the work of the Public Services and Archives Departments by providing accurate, complete, and current cataloging of all materials in the library. Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Direct the Technical Services Department (20%)
Select, train, and supervise technical and professional staff of the Technical Services Department (15%) Submit quarterly performance reviews of all Technical Services employees as per SEBTS HR requirements. (5%)
Ensure the complete and proper cataloging of all library materials according to authoritative international standardsfor maximum discoverability for collections by the library customer.This includes descriptive cataloging, subject analysis and classification of common and diverse materials such as print monographs, electronic resources, microforms, books, serials, and archival materials. (45%)
Update and revise outdated cataloging to meet current standards (5%) Complete original cataloging of complex and diverse library materials (15%) Complete and oversee the copy-cataloging for common materials (25%)
Ensure that all materials are labeled and prepared for integration into the library collection (5%) Supervise the maintenance and improvement of the library’s online catalog and authority records (10%) Oversee the selection and acquisition of all types of materials for the library collection in coordination with library staff. (5%) Assist in the developing and evaluating policies for library procedures as well as accreditation requirements. (5%) Continue professional growth and responsibility through attending and participating in conferences, training, coursework and reading (10%) Other Duties & Responsibilities
Stay knowledgeable of current developments in librarianship, cataloging, collection development and relevant library automation Participate in the selection and weeding of library materials. Participate in library assessment activities. Oversee and direct the inventory process. Participate in determining the organization and layout of the library collections. Contact outside agencies to ensure proper participation in cooperative agreements, including identifying and reporting cataloging errors and problems in WorldCat (international shared database). Serve as a liaison for the library to programs or offices on campus and develop content such as LibGuides to assist with finding materials. Serve in public services as needed. Required
Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution. Thorough knowledge of the principles of cataloging, classification and subject analysis and the international standards used, including Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Resource Description & Access (RDA), and MARC21. Knowledge of methods of collection development and acquisition. Analytical abilities to solve complex problems regarding cataloging, collection development, serials management, and acquisitions. Preferred
Additional master’s degree in a theological field. At least 3 years’ experience working in technical services in areas of increasing responsibility At least 2 years’ experience managing people Fiscal Responsibility
Recommend payroll adjustments General oversight of purchase order and invoicing work of the department Extent of Public Contact
Communicate regularly with faculty, staff, and students to determine appropriate and desirable materials for the collection. Communicate regularly with colleagues at other institutions for advice and ideas in all areas of librarianship. Communicate occasionally with faculty, staff, and students in a public services setting. Represent the Library at conferences and other events. Physical Demands
Computer use and sitting for long periods of time Strength sufficient to lift 50 lbs. or move library carts. Ability to visually examine library materials and edit cataloging records. Ability to maneuver within the library and around campus, to squat, or to ascend steps in order to examine library materials. Working Conditions & Environment
Travel to annual conferences, workshops, etc. (Atla, ALA, ACL, or other professional development) Libraries and archives are susceptible to having airborne particles such as mold, dust, and dust mites. Qualifications
