General Job Summary

The instructor is responsible for teaching a full-time assignment of classes on the Estherville Campus as defined by the College, which may include high school students enrolled in college courses. Must evaluate and report student performance and progress in assigned courses in accordance with College and division policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (% OF TIME)

Constant (67-100%)

  • Effectively organize, teach and evaluate student performance and progress in assigned course offerings in accordance with established syllabi. Assignments may include various delivery formats, methods, work schedules, and locations.
  • Evaluate, report, and record student performance and progress according to farm and division guidelines.
  • Maintain current course syllabi and provide student guides for all courses taught.
  • Design and implement teaching methodologies for classroom and laboratory activities, which will develop the competencies needed for individuals employed in HVAC technology.

Frequent (34-66%)

  • Maintain established office hours.
  • Assist the departmental academic advisor to ensure student progress and make referrals when deemed necessary to other College personnel, such as the Executive Dean, Education Counselor, Financial Aid, etc. for more specialized information and assistance.
  • Attend and serve on assigned and voluntary committees of the College.
  • Assist in the development of a marketing plan for the recruiting of interested students to the HVAC program in cooperation with the Admissions Office.
  • Assist in the development of new courses and revisions of existing courses in the HVAC program area to ensure continued program growth and development.
  • Maintain a program advisory committee.
  • Responsible for proper storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Arrange job training sites for student practical experiences and monitor student progress.
  • Acquire and maintain appropriate certification, licensure, and/or specialized accreditation of HVAC Technology program.
  • Assist with continuing education programming.

Occasional (10-33%)

  • Regularly engage in professional development activities and keep current with developing trends and ideas in profession.
  • Assist in the process of requesting and maintaining instructional equipment and supplies for classroom/laboratory use.
  • Assist in the program budget management process.
  • Assist in the maintenance and enhancement of communications within the College and community.
  • Encourage and foster student participation in professional organizations, College activities and community activities.
  • Serve as an advisor for the activities associated with the occupational section of the career and technical student organization.

  • Represent the College in a positive manner with prospective, former and current students, staff, and the community.
  • Ability to organize and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Present oneself in a classroom setting in a manner that is acceptable and consistent with program and College guidelines, policies, and practices.
  • Assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems and exercise independent judgment when making decisions.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with students, staff, administrators, and other contacts.
  • Read, understand, and express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written communication.
  • Possess strong human relations skills and the ability to effectively relate to diverse personalities.
  • Be a creative, energetic, and self‑motivated individual with demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
  • Possess a working knowledge of personal computers and educational media equipment.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment unique to the HVAC industry.

Special Demands

Position involves sitting or standing in an office or classroom setting. In a lab setting, which may include an actual residential or industrial site, the physical requirements of an HVAC technician are required. Constant (67-100%) reaching, standing, walking, grasping, talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work. Frequent (34-66%) lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and balancing. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, 50 pounds of force occasionally, and infrequently higher force. Required to operate equipment common to the HVAC trade and industry. Must have a valid driver's license, good driving record and provide proof of insurance. May be required to drive personal vehicle between lab sites. Employment with Iowa Lakes Community College is dependent upon successful passage of a criminal background check. Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years (6,000 hours) of recent, relevant experience in the field of instruction to be taught, or 3,000 hours of recent, relevant experience and possess an Associate or Bachelor's Degree in the field of instruction. Prior experience in an educational setting is beneficial. Iowa licensure as an HVAC Service Technician or ability to obtain certification upon hiring.

Salary

Commensurate with education and related experience for a 213‑day contract.
