Position Summary

Under general supervision, employees in this class operate heavy equipment such as cranes, clamshells, power shovels, motor graders, heavy loaders, carryalls, bulldozers, rollers, scrapers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments to maintain and repair roads, parking facilities, airfields, and firebreaks. This class requires knowledge of preventative and corrective maintenance programs for roads, parking facilities, and airfields.

Typical Duties

  1. Operate heavy equipment used in excavation, backfilling, and loading operations such as backhoe, large and small tractors, loader, trencher, grader blade, snow blade, dump truck, flatbed truck, pickup truck, tractor‑trailer, hand and portable electric tools.
  2. Operate a straight truck over 4 tons, usually 10 wheels.
  3. Monitor and review equipment, structures, materials, events, and environment to detect and assess problems. Identify the cause and evaluate results for the best solution.
  4. Read and interpret grade and slope stakes and simple plans.
  5. Manage material resources and time, order needed materials, and account for materials on paper. Complete work within allotted time limits and at acceptable quality standards.
  6. Adhere to procedures, regulations and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
  7. Drive vehicle equipped with tools and materials to job sites.
  8. May grease, adjust and make emergency and minor repairs to equipment to keep in good working order.
  9. May load/unload materials to/from truck.
  10. Respond to emergency calls after normal work hours.
  11. Frequent travel to work sites is required.
  12. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of work experience in roads and ground maintenance, or demonstrated ability to properly use heavy equipment, and knowledge of road maintenance.
  • CDL or other special classification of operator’s license is required.
  • Mathematics to calculate material usage, complete logs, time sheets, notate mileage, and to accurately use measuring tools, equipment and devices.
  • Knowledge of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance practices, repairs and techniques.
  • Ability to follow directions, instructions, structured process and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to provide information, signal others as needed, complete daily records, and to act responsively to inquiries and requests from vendors, customers, management, and to elevate matters appropriately.
  • Ability to manage and accurately track material resources and time and adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Ability to follow established safety rules applicable to heavy equipment operators, to maintain a safe environment, and to adapt and respond to potentially hazardous conditions and use the appropriate PPE.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities, and to build effective working relationships with staff, customers and others.
  • Demonstrated organizational problem‑solving and common sense skills.

Education Requirements

High School Diploma or GED. Technical/other training is a plus.

Certificates or Licenses Required

  • Class A License – Hazmat End
  • Valid Driver’s License

Physical Requirements

  • Maneuvering over uneven ground.
  • Maneuvering in, around, and on equipment.
  • Climbing and working from high platforms.
  • Reaching, pushing, and pulling gears to operate levers, and steering wheel.
  • Bending, stooping, and reaching.
  • Lifting or moving tools, equipment and/or materials up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is performed at a customer’s location on job sites in a construction environment with various tools, and mechanical, electrical and construction equipment. Employees may be exposed to hazardous equipment, toxic substances, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat. Travel between facilities and work locations may be required.
