Job Title: Customer Service

Department: Grocery

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function: Responsible for processing mail, Western Union orders, utility bills, cashing checks, selling money orders, and collecting dry cleaning orders for customers. Additionally, always maintain a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to customers and team members.

Reporting Relations: District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
  • Make an effort to learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, loading or unloading heavy items, noting and passing along suggestions or requests, and performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call.
  • Work with coworkers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Weigh postal packages, run mail through meters, and process certified, express, UPS, registered, and insured mail.
  • Process Western Union orders.
  • Sell money orders, cash payroll, personal, ADC, and social security checks.
  • Sell hunting and fishing licenses.
  • Break down and put money in utility drawers.
  • Sign on the postal department, break down, and turn off the postal register.
  • Process paid outs and send faxes for customers.
  • Count the day’s coupons, process refunds for customers, and process department‑approved refunds.
  • Utilize the intercom system for paging and use appropriate procedures.
  • Remove trash in a timely manner and maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene and dress guidelines.
  • Adhere to company policies, individual store guidelines, and report to work when scheduled and on time.

Secondary Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Sign on and off lottery machines.
  • Assist customers with dry cleaning where applicable.
  • Assist customers at the registers where necessary.
  • Sell and redeem lottery tickets.
  • Process bottle refunds.
  • Assists in other areas of the store as needed.
  • Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Worker Characteristics:

  • Ability to solve practical problems with a variety of variables and limited standardization; interpret instructions.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Ability to file, post, mail materials, copy data from one record to another, interview to obtain basic information, and guide people and provide basic direction.

Education And Experience: High school or equivalent experience and over six months up to one year of similar or related work experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
  • Clear visual requirements at distance of less than 20 inches and more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.
  • Necessary physical activities: stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, standing, walking, talking, and hearing.

Working Conditions: This position is continuously exposed to dirt and noise. It is a fast‑paced work environment with significant pressure.

Equipment Used to Perform Job: Fax, telephone, postal equipment, lottery and money order machines, Western Union equipment, computer, cash register, intercom.

Contacts: Has daily contact with customers, weekly contact with suppliers/vendors, and monthly contact with federal/state governmental or regulatory agencies.
