Essential Functions

Community Engagement

Build strong, lasting relationships with community members, partner organizations, and local businesses.

Plan and facilitate community engagement opportunities including neighborhood meetings, open houses, listening sessions, community celebrations, and more.

Develop outreach campaigns that invite residents to participate in Park District programs, initiatives, and feedback opportunities.

Serve as a key connection point between the public and the Park District, ensuring communication flows in both ways and community voices are heard.

Strategic Communications & Storytelling

Develop and implement communication strategies that support the Park Districts mission, vision, values, and strategic goals.

Craft clear, engaging content for diverse audiences across multiple platforms including website, social media, newsletters, and community reports.

Collaborate with departments to share meaningful stories that highlight parks, programs, activities, facilities, events and the Park District's community impact.

Coordinate messaging and branding to ensure consistent, positive representation of the Park District.

Manage communication planning for major initiatives, community projects, and public updates.

Media & Public Relations

Serve as a Park District spokesperson and primary contact for media inquiries.

Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, and talking points to share key stories and updates.

Build and maintain relationships with local and regional media outlets.

Monitor coverage and prepare regular reports on media engagement and community sentiment.

Crisis Communications and Public Relations

Support the Director of Community Relations in developing communication plans for urgent or sensitive issues.

Provide timely, transparent updates to ensure public trust and confidence in the Park District.

Education/Experience

Bachelors degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.

3-5 years of experience in public relations, community engagement, or communications ideally within a public, nonprofit, or government setting.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking experience.

Proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships with media, community leaders, and diverse audiences.

Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment.

Proficiency with digital communication tools, social media management, and content creation.

Credentials/Licenses/Certifications

Must possess a valid drivers license.

Requirements

Background in community engagement, public participation, or neighborhood relations.
