About the position:
To define and lead the delivery of the agreed H&S safety strategy and business objectives that will improve and enhance Safety, Health and Wellbeing performance in conjunction with UK Senior Management Team.
To monitor H&S legislation and identify relevant policies and develop strategies to ensure HWL UK remain legally compliant and it maintains processes and procedures in line with any changes to that legislation.
Responsible for providing high quality support, monitoring and auditing service for the company, ensuring that appropriate actions and policies are defined and implemented to maintain operational adherence to all relevant legislation, corporate compliance and best practice.
To ensure that Senior Management, Executive and Board Directors are provided with adequate information and assurance about Health and Safety performance, and to ensure that all departments maintain effective, efficient and up to date H&S policies and procedures and are in line with the relevant legislation.
Foster a robust culture where H&S is integral to all HWL UK employees day to day activity and is part of the company DNA.
Implement, monitor and review the protective and preventative measures that the company is required to follow whilst minimising lost time accidents and incidents.
In conjunction with the Quality & Environmental Manager, liaise with the Global QHSE team on all matters relating to the external accreditation processes that are H&S related.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities will include:
Define HWL UK H&S strategy and business objectives in conjunction with the senior management team
At a national level, provide and maintain a high level strategic plan for the HWL UK H&S department for a rolling five-year period
Monitor, identify and communicate all relevant legislation, corporate compliance and best practice H&S requirements to all senior staff in the organisation, to be subsequently cascaded down to local/ onsite managers and all employees
To ensure that the company’s Health Safety and Wellbeing policy is kept up to date with changing legislation whilst ensuring managers are made aware of the impending changes
To Identify H&S gaps and to train or organise any relevant H&S related training in conjunction with HR and operational managers to maintain adherence to legal, corporate and best practice processes and procedures, to include, but not exclusively, First Aid, Fire safety, Chemical Spillage, Radiation adherence, FLT, Racking inspections DG training, IOSH.
Identify and ensure relevant H&S training is conducted at the HWL UK Inductions
To implement a minimum of two H&S audit schedule per annum per site in accordance with SMS company policy, audit all H&S requirements to ensure that all relevant policies and procedures are being adhered to by all HWL UK staff. Record centrally and report findings to appropriate line managers and relevant senior managers re any issues, concerns or corrective action required.
To create a formal ‘audit review’ procedure to ensure that all corrective actions and recommendations have been address and resolved
To maintain a record of all site visits with associated rolling action trackers.
Identify and define effective solutions for any relevant issues and ensure appropriate action is completed to resolve them
To instigate and monitor a H&S plan by site for all operational sites
To attend on an ad hoc basis and monitor relevant QHSEmeetings and ensure these are held by the senior management at each site on a regular basis and with an appropriate range of attendees, with a published schedule.
Maintain an efficient suite of relevant data and reporting tools to effectively demonstrate and track the status and improvement in the performance of HWL UK from a H&S perspective
Involve all levels of staff in H&S initiatives and develop and nurture a positive H&S environment
Develop and co-ordinate effective quarterly working groups relating to H&S / First Aid
To maintain H&S related documentation to include, but not exclusive to Risk Assessments, Safe Working Procedures, and any other associated documentation
To record investigate and recommend corrective actions on reported accidents and near misses
Check sites are maintaining external H&S documentation of suppliers performing work on company premises
Monitor & Action internal and external incidents relating to dangerous goods shipments and review policies appropriately in conjunction with the Company DGSA.
Instigate/ Action & oversee and monitor Incident accident reports and update reporting tools as required
Ensure there are effective mediums in place to distribute relevant H&S policies, procedures and initiatives to all staff.
Ensure that there is an efficient process in place for all staff employees to be able to raise their concerns for consideration by the National H&S Manager and Senior Management regarding any H&S issues without the fear of retribution
To liaise with HWL Head office along with other HWL companies in other countries regarding all relevant H&S issues and agree and define UK compliance.
To assist in the maintenance of a companywide Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery plan, to include live scenario workshops with senior management and at site level annually.
To champion and deliver a road map to achieve ISO 45001 for the UK operation.
To work closely with HR to implement future improvements to staff welfare
About you:
The ideal candidate will be educated in Maths and English (oral and written) to GCSE, Standard Grade or equivalent; grade A-C and be able to demonstrate highly competent computer skills in all areas of Microsoft office. We are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate customer service excellence and effective communication skills.
Up to 3 years experience in a similar role, current up to date knowledge of all aspects of Health & Safety legislation. Proven ability to identify and translate legislation adherence into practical processes. Able to drive with a full clean licence.
Knowledge of ISO 9001 /14001 systems, experience of working in a freight forwarding environment, ability to prepare effective H&S communication tools such as training packages, information boards, update statement, information reports.
