The
Surgical Coordinator
is responsible for coordinating all aspects of tests, procedures and surgeries under the direction and supervision of the Practice Supervisor or Manager and attending physician(s).
Responsibilities
Coordinates all aspects of tests, procedures and surgeries efficiently under the guidance of the practice leadership.
Schedules procedures promptly and politely, ensuring required booking sheets are completed and proper equipment is ordered for surgery.
Verifies patient demographics, logs patient and insurance information, contacts insurance companies for coverage verification, and obtains precertification from the payer.
Coordinates procedure appointments with physician calendars, adjusting schedules as needed and communicating appointment and surgical preparation details to patients.
Arranges co‑surgeon or assistant assistance and cross‑schedules with other departments (e.g., lab for intra‑operative lab pathology or nuclear medicine for injections/mapping).
Ensures pre‑op procedures and documentation are completed, distributes required paperwork, and follows up with results as needed.
Maintains block time guidelines at each of the hospitals.
Coordinates required postoperative care under the direction of the provider.
Obtains surgical billing information, works with the coding department to obtain appropriate codes, posts and reconciles all surgical charges.
Tracks all procedures and surgical testing results.
Provides excellent customer service, greets patients and visitors warmly, and responds promptly to patient needs both in person and on the telephone.
Adapt work schedule to meet practice needs and work additional hours as requested while managing time efficiently.
Participates in surgical service meetings held at the hospitals.
Qualifications
High School diploma, GED, or equivalent, plus two years of related experience.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to learn quickly and adapt in a changing environment.
Preferred
2 years of progressive experience in a medical office.
Proficiency in medical terminology and HIPAA guidelines.
Surgical coding knowledge (CPT and ICD‑10).
CPR certification.
Compensation and Benefits Minimum hourly rate $22.77 (full‑time).
