Overview Cato Institute is seeking an Outreach and Engagement Manager to help the next generation of leaders discover and champion the principles of liberty. The role works with universities, student leaders, and partner organizations to build relationships, create opportunities, and represent Cato at key events nationwide. Hybrid role in Washington, DC. Salary range $55,000 – $70,000 per year.

Key Responsibilities

Develop an outreach strategy with the director of student programs to drive recruitment to Cato’s educational programming and professional opportunities.

Manage relationships with affiliate organizations, university contacts, and students.

Manage and grow Cato’s student briefings program, student events, and on-campus activities.

Support the development of engagement strategies, outreach, and other in-person touchpoints for students and early‑career professionals.

Attend key networking, marketing, and recruitment events to reach academic, student, professional, and community organizations.

Track and maintain engagement records across events and partnerships.

Travel 20% to attend conferences, career fairs, academic meetings, and related events.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in political science, history, communications, business, or related field; advanced degree preferred.

3-5 years of experience in outreach, events, and external affairs roles.

A passion for Cato’s mission and familiarity with the libertarian professional network.

Strong knowledge of the libertarian tradition and a motivation to inspire others to become curious about, and advocates for, libertarian political and economic theory.

Experience organizing student or youth outreach preferred.

Skills

Strong interpersonal, communication, and persuasive skills.

Comfortable navigating conversations with diverse audiences.

Excellent time management, deadline meeting, and priority setting.

Adaptable to changing work environments and handling unexpected events.

Problem‑solving ability and independent work with team collaboration.

Attention to detail for user experience.
