Job Overview

Position: Safety Manager – Department of Transportation, Division of Operations. Location: Pierre (negotiable). Salary: $77,214.24–$90,828.00 annually. Pay Grade: L. Closing Date: 11/05/2025. Responsibilities

Lead DOT safety initiatives, developing and implementing safety policies and programs. Chair the SDDOT Executive Safety Committee, communicating safety program status to executive management. Develop, monitor, and update safety regulatory and awareness policies, revising procedures to meet operational and regulatory changes. Set safety goals and benchmarks, disseminating progress to management and employees. Participate in project safety meetings, incident investigations, root‑cause analyses, and safety incident reviews. Investigate safety complaints, recommend corrective actions, and collaborate with Human Resources on case management and return‑to‑work opportunities. Partner with the State Office of Risk Management to administer risk and loss‑control activities across SDDOT properties. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, or related field required. At least five years of occupational health and safety experience in an industrial environment preferred. Preferred certifications: CSP, CIH, CHSP, CPEA, or CHMM. Knowledge of organization‑wide health and safety programs, strategic planning, project management, OSHA standards, and current SDDOT safety policies. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams). Strong written, verbal, and public speaking skills. Excellent organizational detail, leadership, and supervisory observation abilities. Ability to communicate effectively across all levels, influence cross‑functional change, analyze safety performance, and employ problem‑solving expertise. Benefits
