The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1. In this role, you will perform semi‑skilled maintenance, repair, and janitorial duties to ensure rest areas and related facilities are clean, safe, and welcoming for the traveling public. You will also assist motorists and help maintain WSDOT’s commitment to safety, reliability, and service. This position plays a vital role in supporting WSDOT’s mission by keeping facilities in excellent condition and promoting a positive travel experience for all who use Washington’s transportation system.
What to Expect
This position may require working weekends and holidays and may involve responding to emergency calls outside of scheduled hours. Employees must be prepared for emergency situations in any weather, 24/7, and may work long hours, including nights and rotational shifts. Standby and call‑back may be needed occasionally.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 will:
Clean and disinfect restrooms, ensuring facilities are sanitary and fully operational.
Remove trash, graffiti, gum, and debris from restrooms, sidewalks, and surrounding areas to maintain a clean environment.
Refill restroom supplies, replace air filters and light bulbs, and perform minor maintenance on drains, toilets, and sinks.
Maintain exterior areas by emptying trash containers, cleaning picnic tables, benches, and display cases, and removing litter from grounds.
Operate equipment such as plows, blowers, and shovels to remove snow and apply salt to walkways and parking areas during winter months.
Repair or replace fixtures, plumbing, and minor electrical components, including faucets, dispensers, lights, and heating systems.
Maintain landscaping by mowing, trimming, weeding, and repairing irrigation systems to keep grounds neat and functional.
Participate in safety meetings and training sessions, open and close rest areas, and assist the traveling public as needed.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are
required :
Traffic Control and Safety Knowledge:
Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD, including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging, or ability to obtain the card within 6 months (training provided by WSDOT).
Safety and Emergency Preparedness:
Ability to apply safety principles and respond to workplace incidents or emergencies; must obtain First Aid Certification within six (6) months of hire (training provided by WSDOT).

In addition to the above, the following is also required:
A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a state‑owned vehicle.
Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand‑by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work at elevated heights.
It is
preferred
that qualified candidates also have:
Maintenance Experience:
Experience performing maintenance activities in related fields such as highway maintenance, construction, landscaping, or facilities operations.
Education:
High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate demonstrating foundational academic skills applicable to maintenance and operations work.

Work is performed primarily outdoors and inside rest area facilities in all weather conditions. Duties involve working at various heights and ground levels, sometimes in confined spaces or on uneven terrain. Employees may be exposed to chemicals, cleaning agents, fuels, sanitary waste, and other hazardous materials. The role requires the ability to manipulate and transport up to 50 pounds, as well as use electronic equipment, small engines, power tools, and hand tools.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union‑represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non‑represented positions can be found in Chapter 357‑28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
