Departmental Overview: One of the nation's leading university museums, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) presents more than three hundred film screenings, dozens of public programs, and ten exhibitions annually and is dedicated to art and film in equal measure. Position Summary: This role conceptualizes, curates, and manages 90 film programs annually, coordinates with domestic and international partners, and engages audiences through scholarly and public-facing activities. The Associate Film Curator will help shape BAMPFA's film offerings and support its educational mission and strategic initiatives. This is a full-time career position reporting to the Director of Film and the Senior Film Curator, with lead responsibilities in developing and managing the screening program that presents 350 public programs annually. The role shares primary responsibility for organizing roughly one third of programs, organized into film series around themes such as retrospectives, residencies, regional cinema spotlights, genres, or special events. Curatorial & Programming: Conceptualize, curate, and manage logistics and budgets for 90 film programs per year; research and secure film prints and media; negotiate rental and loan agreements and rights clearances; source film stills and screener copies; oversee technical requirements for screenings; invite and host guest presenters; write program notes and essays; develop promotional materials with the communications department; communicate program content across BAMPFA departments; introduce screenings and host guests; collaborate with guest curators and other institutions; organize lecture series and other public programs. Professional & Community Engagement: Maintain awareness of trends in film exhibition; represent BAMPFA at professional events; support marketing, press interviews, and media relations; cultivate relationships with distributors, artists, curators, collectors, foundations, donors; contribute to long-term strategic planning including multi-year exhibition plans. Professional Representation: Engage with the wider film community through panels and advisory roles; support touring exhibitions; work collaboratively with the curatorial team and participate in meetings; manage a team of work-study staff, interns, and temp contractors in digitizing program calendars and notes. Collection & Preservation: Identify acquisition and conservation priorities; assist in identifying potential donations and preservation projects; serve as department point person for the BAMPFA image database. Development & Fundraising: Support development by engaging with funders and the Film Council; collaborate with curatorial and development teams on fundable projects; participate in grant writing and sponsorships; propose new funding opportunities. Required Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of moving image styles and film exhibition practices; experience programming at cinematheques, museums, festivals, archives, or film venues. Advanced knowledge in film curating, researching, and writing on cinema; excellent verbal and written communication to diverse audiences. Strong organizational skills with ability to set priorities and meet deadlines; awareness of diverse communities served locally, nationally, and internationally. Intellectual curiosity and creativity for presenting scholarly research and distinctive programs; ability to collaborate across teams and with faculty, donors, and colleagues. Technical skills related to evolving media and legacy formats for film and video art; team player able to work in a shared office environment. College degree with specialization in the discipline and four years of curatorial experience (including supervisory) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of Mac OS and MS Office; Filemaker; Google tools; Adobe Acrobat. Salary & Benefits
