Responsibilities
Create and communicate a portfolio analytics vision that engages both business stakeholders and technical teams.
Build a market‑leading analytics team, uniting actuarial, data science, engineering, and business skills into a cohesive, customer‑focused group.
Partner with the five U.S. regions and Bermuda to prioritize analytics initiatives and balance immediate impact with long‑term strategy.
Drive data‑centric culture and adoption of analytics products across underwriting and claims.
Oversee portfolio management, business partnering, data engineering, data science, advanced analytics, and technical pricing, ensuring each area is a center of excellence.
Align priorities with corporate actuarial and CUO functions, working cohesively on underwriting strategy execution.
Improve technical pricing models and portfolio tools to enhance risk selection and reduce loss ratios.
Collaborate with IT Data Services to secure efficient data processing and a single version of the truth.
Promote third‑party data and advanced analytics techniques, directing effort toward high‑value initiatives.
Maintain robust controls across the department, balancing agility with safety.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, or a related field; credentialed actuary preferred.
Minimum 15 years of actuarial experience in U.S. wholesale or specialty insurance.
Exceptional communication and strategic vision skills, with the ability to inspire diverse stakeholders.
Proven leadership in assembling and guiding technical teams to achieve high performance.
Commercial acumen and deep understanding of Markel’s strategy and priorities.
Experience building alliances and cultivating broad relationships across large organizations.
Track record of delivering value through pricing, portfolio management, and analytics.
Strong cross‑functional collaboration, persuasive influence, and goal achievement.
Expertise in attracting, developing, coaching, and retaining talent.
Significant pricing actuarial experience at a commercial or specialty insurer.
In‑depth knowledge of U.S. and Bermuda commercial and specialty insurance data.
Original thinking and creative problem‑solving to improve processes, systems, and products.
Vision for staying ahead of external trends and fostering continuous improvement.
Steadfast, energetic work ethic focused on critical priorities.
Pay Information The base salary for this role ranges from $220,000 to $275,000 for a Managing Director and $270,000 to $330,000 for a Senior Managing Director, with 50%–65% short‑term incentive and 35% long‑term incentive.
