Job Overview Legal and Compliance is responsible for managing all legal and regulatory matters, including contracts, corporate governance, general compliance, academic compliance, employment law matters, intellectual property, product counseling, government relations, and claims. We are looking for a Product Counsel to provide strategic legal guidance across product development, marketing initiatives, consumer protection, intellectual property, and SaaS matters worldwide. The role requires collaboration with Product, Marketing, and Engineering teams to ensure compliance with consumer protection, product safety, privacy, and marketing regulations, with a focus on the US, EU, and global markets. Knowledge of privacy and AI regulations is essential.

Responsibilities

Global Product Regulatory and Consumer Protection:

Serve as the primary point of contact on global product regulations, consumer protection laws, and subscription matters, focusing on US FTC and state laws and EU regulations. Provide pragmatic counsel to support business objectives and enhance product safety and user trust.

Privacy Compliance:

Lead privacy and data protection compliance, focusing on U.S. state and federal laws and GDPR, especially as they intersect with product development and marketing. Develop risk‑mitigation strategies aligned with business needs.

AI Regulations:

Track emerging AI regulations (e.g., EU AI Act) and guide the organization in adopting ethical AI practices across AI/ML‑enabled features.

Strategic Product Counseling:

Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and other teams to review roadmaps, feature implementations, and user experiences, ensuring regulatory compliance while supporting growth.

Marketing/Promotions Compliance:

Partner with marketing and product teams to review promotional activities and ensure compliance with global advertising laws.

Program Development and Risk Management:

Develop, implement, and scale a global product compliance program, create policies, tools, and training materials, and conduct product risk assessments.

Basic Qualifications

Juris Doctor (JD) and admission to a state bar in good standing.

5+ years of experience in a law firm or in‑house legal department.

Experience with U.S. consumer protection laws (FTC, state laws) and privacy regulations.

Experience developing compliance programs and playbooks.

Strong ability to build relationships with senior stakeholders and communicate complex concepts clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

In‑house experience at a technology company with a globally‑served product across consumer, enterprise, and education verticals.

Experience in a fast‑paced, global tech environment.

Track record of balancing legal risk with business objectives.

Strong cross‑cultural stakeholder relationships and ability to work across time zones.

Availability in CST or EST time zone.

Compensation Base salary ranges by U.S. pay zone:

US‑Z1 (Bay Area): not currently available

US‑Z2 (NYC & Seattle Metro): $137,000 – $172,000

US‑Z3 (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CO, CT, DC, GA, IL, MA, MD, OR, RI, TX, VA): $132,000 – $165,000

US‑Z4 (all other U.S. states): varies

Base pay is complemented by a bonus program and equity (RSUs). Pay ranges are subject to change based on location, role level, and experience.
