About The Role Sunderland College is proud to be one of the Department for Education’s ten Construction Technical Excellence Colleges (CTECs). Spearheaded by the College’s pioneering new training facility – the Housing Innovation & Construction Skills Academy (HICSA) – the CTEC will play a central role in boosting the region’s construction skills provision in direct response to local employer needs, co-developing and delivering high-quality teaching practice and curricula in construction, leveraging employer engagement and investment, and promoting clear pathways for learners to progress into work in the construction sector.
As Regional Construction Skills Director, you will play a pivotal role in driving the success of the CTEC and ensuring its impact reaches far beyond HICSA to the further education provider network in the North East. You will lead a region-wide approach to construction skills training, working collaboratively with other colleges, independent training providers, local authorities, and industry partners. In this position, you will develop, lead and contribute to pioneering employer and skills partnerships, and collaborate with providers and other key stakeholders to ensure curricula and specialist facilities continue to evolve to meet future skills needs.
Role Responsibilities
Leading the strategic development and implementation of the CTEC's regional mission and delivery plan to uplift construction skills training across the North East.
Acting as the primary interface between employers and employer representative bodies in the construction sector, and the CTEC and HICSA at a strategic level.
Working across regional further education ecosystem to ensure the CTEC and its partners are well positioned to respond to existing and emerging skills needs, ensuring curricula and specialist facilities continue to evolve.
Facilitating regional curriculum co-creation across providers and employers, ensuring it reflects future-facing skills needs such as digitalisation, modern methods, site integration, and sustainability.
Representing - as an ambassador for construction skills training - the CTEC and wider provider network at regional forums, skills boards, and construction industry networks.
About The Candidate The Regional Construction Skills Director will help shape a high-performing, collaborative construction skills ecosystem across the North East, ensuring that the CTEC achieves its mission to raise standards, expand opportunity, and meet the evolving needs of employers and learners across the region. The successful candidate will be a changemaker and have direct experience in and/or a strong understanding of the construction sector, including residential, industrial, commercial and civil sub-sectors. They will also have strong commercial acumen, relationship management and partnership development skills, and a good understanding of further and higher education and training.
Essential Skills & Experience
Exceptional leadership and management skills, including project management skills.
Demonstrable experience of working in and/or with construction sector.
Experience of successful partnership working, including for example, with colleges and independent training providers, universities, businesses, funders, local or national government.
Strong people skills, with the ability to challenge and encourage others, building teams which are courageous and able to take risks to innovate.
Significant experience of managing budgets, including high value externally funded projects.
