The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (called Base Camp), which will be completed in 2026. The public‑facing portion of this renovation will be the new National Geographic Museum of Exploration. Components of the new museum will include a state‑of‑the‑art pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk‑through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and exciting new event space. The capstone of the renovation is a one‑of‑a‑kind nighttime experience in the courtyard.

The Manager of Security will work closely with the Director of Security, Health & Safety and will be responsible for communicating and implementing strategic security programs, and overseeing in‑house and contract security personnel to ensure the protection of property, assets and people.

Responsibilities

Supervise the performance activities of the control center Sergeants and contract officers to ensure job requirements are being met and departmental operations are effective. Responsible for the Command Center Sergeants and contract Officers weekly work schedule and for determining post coverage needs for special events coordination and coverage requirements with security vendors. Work closely with local law enforcement & private security agencies. Responsible for providing and maintaining written processes and procedures for security policies, programs and current security practices. Make recommendations concerning internal policy issues affecting the overall security and operational effectiveness of the organization, suggesting improvements where necessary. Serve as a key resource for contingency‑related plans and emergency preparedness issues. Oversee screening operations to ensure compliance with safety protocols, staff professionalism, and visitor experience standards. Supervise screening Officers, maintain coverage schedules, and coordinate with the Director and security vendor to address staffing or technical issues. (65%)

Program site access control system using approved processing requirements such that system provides for security and enables required access in support of operations. Modify individual access as new readers are added or individual access levels change, as requested by authorized sponsors. Responsible for oversight of visitor management systems, screening stations, and building access control processes. (20%)

Responsible for monitoring of all physical security systems, including but not limited to intrusion detection, CCTV and access control. (5%)

Assist with implementing and administering Security Education Training Awareness (SETA) -Program by working with security specialists to obtain the knowledge and training on current security policy and procedures. Support ongoing training and performance evaluations for screening station officers and security staff. (5%)

Assist with the development of policy, procedure and execution of the Physical Security program. (5%)

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and security training certification.

5+ years working in the Security field and 3+ years in a supervisor’s role pertaining to physical security management.

Leadership and Expertise: Proven track record of managing, training, and mentoring a team. Excellent oral and written communication. Knowledge of physical security systems.

Professional Conduct: Integrity and ethical conduct in all actions.

Initiative and Responsibility: Self‑motivated, taking ownership and proactively identifying security risks.

Collaboration and Attention to Detail: Works well in a team environment and independently. High detail orientation.

Communication: Strong skills for coordinating with departments and providing clear instructions.

Availability: Respond to emergencies on short notice and work long hours as needed.
