State Government Affairs Director – Field-based (CA, AZ, NV, HI, AK)
Join Vertex Pharmaceuticals as a State Government Affairs Director, a field-based role responsible for developing and executing the company's state and regional government affairs and public policy strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, coordinate, and lead state/regional public policy efforts aligned with corporate objectives.
Collaborate with communications, patient advocacy, policy, medical affairs, and marketing departments to ensure policy goals serve patient needs and company goals.
Analyze and monitor legislation, regulations, and political activity that may impact Vertex.
Develop relationships with government officials, community leaders, advocacy groups and stakeholders to advance Vertex goals.
Lead cross‑functional initiatives with impact across teams.
Prepare written analyses, testimony and background materials in support of Vertex objectives.
Integrate public relations objectives with the state/regional public policy strategy and identify opportunities to increase awareness of rare disease and disease burden.
Manage lobbyist contracts and ensure compliance with state laws for lobbyist registration, reporting and political contributions.
Identify and pursue additional opportunities to forward the company’s business objectives.
Travel 40‑50% within the region (California preferred).
Minimum Qualifications
7‑10 years of current and relevant experience in state government affairs or a major trade association with significant direct lobbying experience.
Proven ability to build and sustain relationships with legislators, administrators and community leaders.
Strong knowledge of state legislative and regulatory systems.
Excellent strategic planning, communication and presentation skills.
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred in science, law, government or public policy.
Pharmaceutical or healthcare sector experience is strongly preferred.
Energy and passion toward patients, science and public health.
Teamwork and collaboration skills with influence at all business levels.
Highly organized, detail‑oriented and capable of managing multiple projects independently.
Pay Range $199,500 - $299,200
