Summary This position, located within the Medical Services Division of Animal Care & Control, performs professional work in examining and treating shelter animals, performing surgery, monitoring and maintaining preventive healthcare programs, providing medical analysis on animal cruelty cases and other cases involving animals. Offering a $2,000 sign-on bonus.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Oversees the health care of shelter animals, and ensures the maintenance of accurate and complete animal health records

Plans and conducts medical exams of animals sheltered by Animal Care & Control

Diagnoses animal health problems and initiates appropriate treatment

Administers an effective disease prevention program by implementing an inoculation regime and ensuring effective shelter sanitation and disinfection

Monitors and maintains preventative healthcare programs

Performs spay and neuter surgeries on shelter animals (including rabbits) and other surgeries as needed

Provides emergency medical treatment to sick or injured animals on a rotating 24-hour on-call basis

Evaluates animals victimized by cruelty and neglect and provides court testimony as necessary

Euthanizes animals as necessary

Provides animal health information and assistance to those adopting shelter animals; provides follow-up medical care as appropriate

Works with shelter staff to order and maintain veterinary supplies

Provides instruction and leadership of shelter technicians and other staff who assist with veterinary procedures

Maintains assigned equipment

Provides recommendations and considerations to the shelter manager and shelter director

Performs routine administrative/clerical duties as required, these may include but are not limited to preparing forms, reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, etc.

Attends training, meetings, conferences, workshops, etc., as necessary to maintain job knowledge, skills and required certifications

Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Excellent communication skills, adept at conveying information clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to work well with others in a team environment.

Skilled in fostering positive working relationships and contributing to a collaborative team environment.

Proactive and detail-oriented, effectively planning, prioritizing, and organizing work to achieve desired outcomes with minimal oversight.

Highly adaptable and skilled in task-switching, effectively managing multiple responsibilities and projects concurrently.

Skilled in animal handling, possessing knowledge of various species, and capable of interacting with them safely and effectively.

Proven ability to work effectively under pressure, exercising good judgment and self-control to navigate stressful situations and peak workload periods with efficiency.

Proficient in accurate record-keeping, ensuring the integrity and accessibility of detailed documentation for audit purposes.

Knowledgeable in legal frameworks, including laws, legal codes and relevant regulations, applying this understanding to ensure compliance and adherence to legal standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree (DVM or VMD) and a minimum two (2) years of related experience and/or training.

Hold a North Carolina State license to practice Veterinary Medicine and Controlled Substance Certification.

Ability to obtain a DEA Controlled Substance Certification.

Possess a valid North Carolina (NC) or South Carolina (SC) driver’s license
