As a Senior Cloud Network Engineer, you will be at the heart of Microsoft’s modern network engineering process, working in a team that manages Microsoft’s enterprise global network routing and optical infrastructure. We are focused on solving the most interesting challenges of developing innovative solutions while ensuring service reliability by identifying and eradicating defects within the infrastructure. Primary Responsibilities
Network Design and Implementation Apply knowledge of networks, industry trends, and field data toward implementation and operations. Design datacenter or network site development – create bill of materials and translate high‑level design into low‑level design and collaboration. Participate or contribute to network design or code reviews. Ensure secure‑by‑design philosophy to meet best‑practice security standards. Maintain and Operate Networks
Monitor, analyze, and troubleshoot network infrastructure; participate in on‑call/Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) duties and create root cause analysis for network incidents. Continuous improvement, testing and validation of network and optical devices. Manage network deployments within a team of engineers. Troubleshoot enterprise‑grade routing networks and relevant protocols. Troubleshoot enterprise‑grade optical network and relevant protocols. Supporting People and Execution
Collaborate within and across teams by proactively sharing information with an appropriate level of detail for their audience; resolve conflicts and issues across interdependent teams and engage with partners and stakeholders to resolve issues and meet mutual objectives. Mentor and provide feedback to other engineers, seek mentorship and feedback from others, and share ideas and insights for improving team‑oriented behaviors, including DevOps and live site handling skills. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 4+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation OR Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation OR Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field OR equivalent experience. 3+ years of managing enterprise‑grade carrier‑class networks 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation including scripting for network provisioning and monitoring 3+ years of experience with routing and switching protocols (e.g., BGP, OSPF, IS‑IS) and their interaction with MPLS. 3+ years of hands‑on experience with enterprise‑grade routing and switching platforms 3+ years of hands‑on experience with MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) technologies, including traffic engineering, Segment routing, EVPN, L3VPN and L2VPN mechanisms across MPLS backbones. Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 3+ years of experience managing enterprise‑grade optical transport systems Excellent working understanding of optical transmission technologies including DWDM, CWDM, ROADM, and OTN Proficiency in fiber characterization technologies (OTDR, CD, PMD, etc) Familiarity with optical performance management tools Experience with provisioning, troubleshooting, and maintaining long‑haul and metro optical networks Ability to interpret fiber plant documentation and optical schematics Compensation and Benefits
Cloud Network Engineering IC4 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 – $234,700 per year. The range may differ for specific locations (e.g., San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area).
