Washington Examiner
The Washington Examiner is seeking a highly experienced and energetic News Editor to join our fast-paced newsroom. This is a pivotal leadership role for a candidate with a deep passion for US politics and policy and an innate understanding of how it shapes Washington D.C., the country, and the world. If you thrive in a dynamic environment, possess an insatiable appetite for enterprise journalism, and can expertly guide political reporters to produce high-impact, politically savvy content, we want to hear from you. This role is based in Washington D.C. and a remote work set-up will not be considered.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Lead and Inspire:
Serve as a constant source of enterprise content, challenging our team of talented White House and Congressional reporters to go beyond the daily news cycle.
Set the Agenda:
Direct coverage that resonates powerfully with a conservative audience, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of their interests, what drives them, and the key issues facing voters in the lead-up to the 2026 and 2028 elections.
Drive Accountability:
Hold reporters to the highest standards of journalistic excellence. You will challenge them to produce their best work, including coverage of sometimes uncomfortable or complex topics, while remaining fair, cordial, and enthusiastic in your mentorship.
Innovate Storytelling:
Bring creative means of telling stories—from data-driven features and investigative pieces to compelling analysis that maximize engagement across all our platforms.
Collaborate Seamlessly:
Be a crucial team player, working openly and collaboratively with other editors and superiors. We are looking for a partner in journalism, not a gatekeeper.
Maintain Coverage Flexibility:
Although the core schedule is Monday to Friday, you must be prepared to hop on to cover breaking news and other major stories that may require weekend or after-hours availability.
What You’ll Bring:
Experience:
A minimum of five years of experience covering US politics in a national newsroom.
Political Acumen:
A profound understanding of the federal government, Congress, and the conservative political landscape.
Sourcing (Ideally):
A well-developed network of sources within the federal government and on Capitol Hill is a significant advantage.
Drive:
The ability to work comfortably and effectively in a demanding, fast-paced newsroom environment.
Compensation and Benefits: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. The Washington Examiner offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 401K, dental, and vision coverage.
