The Johns Hopkins Health System Controller will oversee financial reporting and operations across the entire system, including hospitals, joint ventures, outpatient centers, and physician practices. Working with the VP of Corporate Finance and entity CFOs, the Controller will ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and accounting processes. The Controller will provide strategic insights to support decision‑making and work closely with executive leadership to ensure financial health, optimize resource allocation, and improve financial performance across the enterprise. Reporting Relationship
The Controller will report directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Johns Hopkins Medicine and to the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Johns Hopkins Health System. The Controller will have five direct reports: Associate Controller, Assistant Controller, Executive Director Tax Compliance, Director Fixed Asset/Project Accounting, and Director Accounts Payable Shared Services. Essential Functions
Financial Reporting & Analysis
– Oversee preparation of consolidated financial statements for the system and related entities, ensuring compliance with GAAP and other regulations; prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for stakeholders and analyze financial performance to improve profitability and operational efficiency. Accounting & Internal Controls
– Lead and manage the system‑wide accounting team, ensuring accurate recording of all transactions; develop and maintain internal controls; oversee month‑end and year‑end close processes for all entities. Budgeting & Forecasting
– Monitor budget performance and develop and update monthly forecasts in conjunction with the Vice President of Budget, Financial Analysis and Decision Support and entity CFOs. Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
– Ensure compliance with accounting regulations, tax laws, and industry‑specific financial guidelines; coordinate and lead external audits for a clean opinion and no material audit adjustments. Financial Systems & Process Improvement
– Lead innovation and improvement of financial accounting systems and tools across the system; evaluate and streamline financial processes; work closely with IT and other departments to ensure proper integration. Team Leadership & Development
– Lead, mentor, and develop a high‑performing central accounting and finance team; provide coaching, support staff growth, and foster a collaborative work environment. Education
CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or MBA required. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required. Experience
Minimum of 7–10 years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a managerial or leadership role in healthcare finance. Strong understanding of healthcare financial systems, regulations, and the unique financial needs of hospitals, physician practices, outpatient centers, and other healthcare services. Proven experience in financial operations, reporting, forecasting, and compliance within a complex, multi‑entity healthcare environment. Experience with financial software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems (e.g., Epic, SAP, Workday, or similar). Skills
Strong leadership and management skills. Expertise in financial reporting, analysis, and accounting principles specific to healthcare organizations. In‑depth knowledge of healthcare regulations, reimbursement methodologies, and compliance requirements. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present financial information to senior management, clinicians, and non‑financial stakeholders. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills. Proficient in financial software and systems. Working Conditions & Physical Demands
Full‑time position based in the health system’s corporate office or central administrative location. Occasional travel required to health system facilities, hospitals, or outpatient centers. Compensation
Salary range: Minimum $/visit – Maximum $/visit. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
