Senior COBOL Developer at WPS—A health solutions company
Role Snapshot Our Senior COBOL Developer is responsible for enhancing and maintaining complex applications, as well as developing detailed technical specifications. This role involves leading and supporting the design, development, deployment, and ongoing maintenance of programs. The developer will interpret client requirements and collaborate closely with cross‑functional Information Systems teams. In our mainframe environment we rely on senior developers to have recent experience and a strong understanding of CICS, and we have a robust DB2 environment as well.
Salary Range $95,000 ~ $115,000 (base pay may vary within the posted range based on job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, and may fall outside the posted range)
Work Location Our first consideration will be to have this new employee live in the state of Wisconsin to take advantage of hybrid work and collaboration. Employees living within 45 miles of WPS Headquarters (1717 W. Broadway in Madison, WI) will be expected to work hybrid two days a week on a regular basis.
As a secondary consideration, we do offer remote work in the following approved states: Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin.
If not regionally local to Madison, WI, frequent monthly travel to our WPS Headquarters (1717 W. Broadway in Madison, WI) will be expected.

Can partner with Quality Assurance teams to validate and test applications.
Enjoy performing peer reviews of code and technical documentation to maintain quality standards.
Have utilized source control tools to safeguard code integrity, including prior versions.
Can coordinate and communicate development activities with other teams, including database management, infrastructure, and quality assurance.
Thrive in complex environments managing multiple concurrent initiatives and elevate issues appropriately.
Minimum Qualifications
U.S. citizenship is required for this position due to Department of Defense restrictions.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent related work experience.
5 or more years of experience in application development, implementation, and support.
Proven expertise in mainframe development, with advanced proficiency in COBOL, TSO, JCL, CICS, MVS, and File Aid.
Solid proficiency with VSAM file structures.
Strong background in relational databases, such as DB2 and SQL.
Experience in applying Agile methodology in department projects.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail.
Strong verbal and communication skills with ability to explain technical information to non‑technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
5 or more years of expertise in mainframe development, with advanced proficiency in COBOL, TSO, JCL, CICS, MVS, and File Aid.
Exposure to WPS’s Mainframe systems and Tricare business line.
Remote Work Requirements
High speed cable or fiber internet
Minimum of 10 Mbps downstream and at least 1 Mbps upstream internet connection (can be checked at https://speedtest.net)
