Correctional Youth Security Officer III – Gilliam Youth Service Center
Location: Gilliam Youth Services Center, 2844 North Downing St., Denver, CO 80205
Department Information Open only to Colorado state residents. Recruitment may fill multiple vacancies. The Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides services to youth ages 10‑21 in secure facilities. The unit provides 24‑hour care and supervision of pre‑adjudicated and adjudicated youth.
Description of Job Direct and essential care and supervision of youth in secure facilities. Responsibilities include safety/security, youth center programming, documentation, training and organizational accountability. Positions may require overtime on a rotating basis.
Key Responsibilities
Provide direct care, safety, security and supervision of adjudicated/pre‑adjudicated youth.
Supervise youth or groups, monitor daily activities, orient new youth, respond to crisis situations with non‑escalation and de‑escalation techniques.
Use physical response/restraint when necessary and debrief all incidents.
Perform searches, interview youth and document incidents.
Implement behavioral management programs, teach and redirect youth.
Document observations, unit activities, youth group activities and required logs.
Demonstrate organizational values of nonviolence, open communication, social responsibility, growth and change, social learning, democracy, emotional intelligence.
Adhere to the DYS Compliance Review Standards and CDHS policies.
Complete training: Pre‑Service academy, Youth Center training, orientation, and maintain ongoing training.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned.
Must be physically able to intervene with assaultive youth and able to work shift hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
No felony convictions or history of domestic violence; valid U.S. driver’s license.
Background checks and required screenings (CBI, Fingerprint, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
College education in behavioral health, juvenile justice or related field.
Experience working with adjudicated or detained youth in secure residential facilities or behavioral health settings.
Facilitated psycho‑educational groups and used trauma‑responsive interventions.
Mentoring, coaching, de‑escalation, motivational techniques.
State service experience and verbal communication skills.
Highly Desirable Competencies

Self‑control, composure, and ability to manage stressful situations.
Clear verbal communication and respectful interaction.

Work Environment Shift work, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Shift length may vary between 8, 10 or 12 hours. Overtime may be required. The job is considered essential and may require travel for training or alternate sites.
Conditions of Employment Full background and credential verification is required. Must be 21 years of age or older, with no felony convictions. Valid driver's license. Successful completion of pre‑service training and field training required. The position is subject to the CDHS Merit Review and related policies.
