Overview
Correctional Youth Security Officer III - Gilliam Youth Service Center. This position is an direct care/essential role that provides direct and engaging supervision of youth in DYS state-operated secure facilities. Specific duties and expectations include safety/security, youth center programming, documentation/recording and reporting, training, and organizational accountability. Some overtime may be required on a rotating basis based on business needs. Responsibilities
Safety/Security: Provide direct care, safety, security, and supervision of adjudicated and/or pre-adjudicated youth in a secure setting. Monitor, participate, support, and enforce behavioral management plans (e.g., Behavioral Contracts, Individual Growth and Change Plans). Duties include supervision of youth or groups, supervision of daily activities, youth orientation, intervention in crisis situations, non-escalation, de-escalation, use of physical response/restraint in emergencies, debriefing of incidents, and conducting searches. Youth Center Programming: Implement and follow the Youth Center’s behavioral management program with positive engagement; teach, coach, and redirect youth within the program. Support DYS initiatives related to youth programming and crisis intervention. Documentation/Recording and Reporting: Document observations of youth behavior and response to programs; record all unit activities in logs/records systems and document youth group activities in appropriate databases. Organizational Accountability: Contribute to a healthy, positive, and respectful cultural climate; adhere to CDHS/DYS policies and the Code of Conduct; support a trauma-responsive environment guided by organizational values such as Nonviolence, Open Communication, Social Responsibility, Growth and Change, Social Learning, Democracy, and Emotional Intelligence. Training: Complete DYS Pre-Service training, Youth Center training, and new-employee orientation; may require travel; complete online training and support prevailing behavior management/intervention strategies; develop problem-solving and relationship-building skills grounded in trauma, boundaries, and youth development. Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work Substitutions
Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Preferred Qualifications
College education in a behavioral health and/or juvenile justice-related field Experience working with adjudicated/detained youth in a secure residential facility and/or behavioral health setting Experience facilitating psychoeducational groups Experience with trauma-informed care for adolescents Experience in youth leadership roles, mentoring, or coaching Experience using verbal de-escalation and motivational techniques Relevant years of state service experience Highly Desirable Competencies
Conflict management skills Strong work ethic, integrity, dependability Sound judgment and decision-making Self-control and ability to manage stressful situations Clear and respectful verbal communication Ability to identify hazards or security breaches and communicate information Ability to study information and document events in a clear, factual manner Work Environment
Shifts include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shifts may vary and may include 8, 10, or 12 hours; mandatory overtime may be required. This is an essential position and may require reporting to work during inclement weather. Conditions of Employment & Compliance
