Opportunity Patient Care Associate - Orthopedic and Urology Unit

Ellison 6 is a thirty-six-bed adult inpatient orthopedic/urology/surgery unit. The patient population includes orthopedic and urologic patients who are post-surgical intervention and pre-surgery from Emergency Department, front door or clinical admissions. This individual must be able to provide a flexible schedule and coverage on rotating weekends and holidays.

Job Summary Job Description Summary

Working under the direction of licensed personnel, assists patients with activities of daily living tasks such as bathing, dressing, and eating. Also assists with taking patients' temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.

Essential Functions

Performs vital signs, weights/heights, intakes, and outputs with accuracy and within established time frame and/or as requested.

Completes all documentation in the medical record as required.

Interacts with patients and their families effectively.

Helps patients with a number of basic hygiene tasks. This may include bathing and dressing patients, helping them use the toilet if needed, and feeding them.

Assist with helping patients turn and reposition themselves in bed as needed and help them move between the bed and a wheelchair if they use one.

Listens to any health concerns patients may have and report those concerns to the nurses.

Education High School Diploma or Equivalent

Licenses and Credentials

Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] - Data Conversion - Various Issuers preferred

Certified Medical Assistant [National Certification] - Data Conversion - Various Issuers preferred

Emergency Medical Technician - Basic [Massachusetts] - Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services preferred

Nursing Assistant [LNA - Massachusetts] - Massachusetts Board of Nursing preferred

Experience Experience working in patient care/elder care 1-2 years preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Strong patient/customer service skills.

Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.

Proficient computer skills to work efficiently with electronic medical records.

Qualifications Schedule

Day (7a-3p, 7a-7p), Evenings (3-11pm)

40 hours per week

Rotating holiday and weekend requirement

What are we looking for The Patient Care Associate (PCA) will assist the RNs in Ellison 6 with a variety of functions including phlebotomy and EKGs, transport patients, check rooms and equipment, assist patients with dressing and feeding and some clerical functions. Our Patient Care Associate team prides themselves in responding to patient requests in a timely manner, safeguarding patient confidentiality, monitoring patient safety, and always communicating in a respectful manner.

Skills

Effective customer service orientation and the ability to interact with diverse groups of patients, staff and providers.

Demonstrated ability to solve basic patient and practice problems using a combination of strong interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail and superior organizational skills.

Ability to lift and transport patients, using the appropriate physical technique, in a safe manner for the patient and self.

Preferred: Must have recent experience, and/or training, in clinical patient care.

Required: Licensed, certified or enrolled student in a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Mental Health Technician, or EMT accredited program, at the time of hire, OR Candidate enrolled in a Nursing program, Pre-Med or PA undergraduate program with at least one semester of patient care rotations completed at time of hire.
