We are seeking a Director of Engineering to lead our uranium enrichment engineering department, oversee multi-site technical operations, and drive strategic excellence across federal, commercial, and national security programs. This executive role is responsible for ensuring technical rigor, regulatory compliance, and operational performance across a portfolio of high-consequence nuclear facilities and projects.

This role is ideal for a highly experienced nuclear engineer with demonstrated leadership in licensing, readiness, safety basis development, system engineering, and integrated startup/testing operations.

Location On-site in Oak Ridge, TN

Your Day to Day as the Director of Engineering

Provide strategic leadership over engineering functions including design, systems, nuclear safety, and process engineering across DOE and NRC programs.

Direct multi-disciplinary engineering teams supporting capital nuclear projects, facility startup, readiness assessments, and safety basis development.

Serve as the company’s principal technical authority on regulatory compliance with 10 CFR 830, 10 CFR 50, 10 CFR 70, ASME B31.3, DOE Orders (e.g., 420.1, 426.2), and NRC Technical Specifications.

Oversee development and peer review of Safety Evaluation Reports, IROFS determinations, and licensing amendment requests.

Drive integration of engineering, construction, and operations functions during project startup and commissioning phases.

Guide root cause evaluations, risk assessments, and reliability studies for safety-class and safety-significant systems.

Represent BWXT with key clients including DOE, NNSA, NRC, and national laboratories; brief senior federal and executive leadership on engineering and safety initiatives.

Develop and implement strategic growth initiatives and mentor emerging technical leaders.

Ensure quality assurance and continuous improvement in engineering deliverables, aligned with Six Sigma methodologies.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (Master’s preferred).

Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.), Tennessee or equivalent state.

20+ years of experience in nuclear engineering, operations, and regulatory oversight.

Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to influence at executive and federal levels.

Excellent written communication and technical report authorship.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance (active clearance strongly preferred).

Ability to report to an assigned work location. This is not a remote opportunity.

Preferred Qualifications

Former NRC-licensed Senior Reactor Operator or equivalent leadership in licensed operations.

Demonstrated success in leading technical teams on complex DOE/NNSA/NRC projects.

Expertise in safety basis documentation, licensing, startup/test integration, and DOE readiness processes.

Six Sigma Black Belt certification and experience applying process improvement methodologies.

Experience managing engineering integration across construction, startup, and operational readiness in DOE capital projects.

Pay: $136,000- $203,000

The base salary range for this position in Tennessee (US-TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $136,000 and $203,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed at-will, unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
