Operations Supervisor

In coordination with the Plant Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for providing day-to-day oversight of department staff, shift operations, troubleshooting equipment problems, and generating work orders as needed. This role provides operational, commercial, and personnel leadership to plant shift operating teams to maintain efficient and cost-effective facility operations while ensuring compliance with all corporate and regulatory environmental, health, and safety rules and requirements. Primary Duties/Responsibilities
Supervises a staff of Plant Operators – trainees, 1A licensed Operators, 2A licensed Operators, and 3A licensed Operators, directing their daily duties in accordance with plant requirements. Coordinates projects with other plant departments, Engineering, and contractors. Leads and guides shift crews to monitor all facets of plant operations and incoming data. Stands watch on an assigned operation station in the event of emergency or staffing issues. Reviews all operations station worksheets for anomalies and errors. Checks worksheets prior to data entry or turnover for data entry into Hach Wims. Assists operations staff with troubleshooting operational issues. Performs visual observations of process areas to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory measures. Processes laboratory data to make process control change suggestions. Calculates process control measures (e.g., MCRT, SVI, Detention Time, Hydraulic Loading) as needed. Maintains a log book for plant operations during the shift. Manages, evaluates, schedules, and develops the O&M staff and ensures adequate staffing. Coordinates alternate staff in case of absences following overtime equalization policy. Provides leadership during alarms and abnormal conditions and leads emergency response actions. Evaluates operation, maintenance, and performance of wastewater treatment facilities, processes, systems, and equipment. Reviews and supervises system improvements, designs, operating parameters, performance testing, troubleshooting, and resolving advanced problems. Reviews designs and constructed facilities; makes recommendations for operational improvements. Oversees construction management personnel during facilities upgrades and startup; supervises operational services and treatment plant construction staff during startup and initial operation of new or upgraded facilities. Participates in developing and complying with operating policies ensuring environmental and safety rule compliance. Completes reports documenting plant status, equipment, operating data, and events. Collects data on unplanned outages and makes recommendations to minimize recurrence. Acts as real-time shift interface with Commercial Group regarding plant operations, outages, fuel, and generation schedules. Performs Issuer and Verifier functions using Lock Out/Tag Out systems to ensure safe operations. Manages department contract deliverables and scheduling; orders materials and supplies as needed. Ensures equipment and processes are well maintained and functioning properly; maintains clean and safe workstations and facilities in line with regulatory requirements. Maintains operational documents and records; ensures work is performed safely and professionally by following corporate and regulatory policies, procedures, and emergency response procedures. Operates equipment manually and via instrument control panels; works assigned shifts that may include weekends and holidays; responds to emergencies and may work additional hours as needed. Operates company and client-owned vehicles. Work Environment
Work is performed inside and outside with exposure to weather conditions. Potential exposure to noise, sewage, silica, dust, fumes, smoke, gases, greases, oils, electrical energy, solvents, and vibrations. Work may involve slippery/uneven surfaces, machinery with moving parts, ladders/scaffolding, below ground work, and exposure to water and other liquids. Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background
High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Science, Engineering, Biology/Laboratory, or related fields preferred. 5+ years of experience in a plant operations position. Experience with maintenance systems and project contract administration in the water/wastewater utilities industry preferred. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Strong process control knowledge; excellent reading, math, writing, scientific, and verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational, scheduling, and prioritizing abilities. Ability to read and interpret data from maps, engineering drawings, blueprints, gauges, and graphs. Ability to follow written and oral instructions; read and understand complex technical instructions. Ability to read, interpret, and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, and computer consoles. Ability to interpret service manuals and drawings and write SOPs. Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; provide input for corrective actions and implement actions as needed. Proficient in Windows, MS Office, Google Workspace, OPS, EAM & CMMS, and other computer-based systems. Working knowledge of PLC/SCADA systems, DCS control systems, and data acquisition/historical trending systems. Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant equipment, processes, regulations, and safety policies. Must be capable of being assigned in responsible charge of the facility and react to unplanned events. Ability to lead by example, train and mentor staff, and work with contractors and vendors. Ability to work as part of a team and maintain safety consciousness; ability to work with minimal supervision. Required Certification/Licenses/Training
Must possess and maintain a NYS 3A wastewater certification with ability to be delegated as Operator in Charge. Valid NYS Driver's license and ability to meet risk management guidelines. Physical Requirements
No physical restrictions preventing performance of required duties. Regularly required to talk or hear; may stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach, climb, kneel, crouch, or crawl; may lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision. Additional Information
