Overview
Quality Control Specialist I – Abstractor – Time Limited. The Public Health Institute (PHI) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting health, well-being, and quality of life. This is a regular full-time, time-limited position located in Sacramento, CA, expected to last from October 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, with a possibility of extension contingent on funding availability. Remote work may be allowed, and work is during core Pacific time hours. Some travel to perform field work or attend educational meetings may be required. California-based candidates are preferred, but applicants from outside California will be considered. Base pay range: $70,296.00/yr - $101,911.00/yr. The typical hiring range is from $70,296 (minimum) to $78,199 (the start of the second quartile), based on 100% FTE and factors such as knowledge, skills, experience, internal equity, and budget availability. Responsibilities
Abstracts Physician Only, Death Certificate Only, Nursing Home Only and Coroner’s cases Abstracts for assigned contracted reporting facilities, including surgery centers, radiation centers, or hospitals Accurately interprets and codes AJCC TNM, Extent of Disease (EOD), ICD-O-3, Solid Tumor Rules, and Hematopoietic reporting requirements Performs case-finding for contracted facilities as needed Maintains at least 97% accuracy on abstracts Performs Match Tasks in Statewide DMS Resolves assigned RPSE (Resolve Patient Set Errors) Screens and updates treatment information from image files uploaded from Surgery Centers and Radiation Oncology Centers (ROCS) Screens and creates Patient and CTCs from image files uploaded from ROCS Performs Death Clearance activities including screening, linking, follow back, and case entry in Statewide DMS Processes reportable electronic Pathology (ePath) reports Performs other essential duties as required or assigned Minimum Qualifications
2 years of related experience in a hospital, regional or central cancer registry Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field, or substitute with four additional years of related experience Credentialed by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) as an Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) Other Qualifications
Experience with regional/central registry operations, including data collection, visual editing, case consolidation, casefinding, follow-up and follow-back procedures, and auditing Ability to create clear documents for educational purposes and statewide distribution Maintain at least 97% abstracting accuracy as required by the CCR Maintain ODS credentials by attending required educational meetings Ability to meet productivity goals and work independently or as part of a team Ability to learn and operate new software programs Knowledge of cancer reporting requirements, resources, and tools for data collection, abstraction, and editing Strong medical terminology knowledge and understanding of cancer disease processes Strong communication skills; ability to communicate accurately and clearly Strong mathematical skills including statistics, computations, and percentages Ability to travel for field work or educational meetings if necessary Must be able to pass the required background check FLSA and Employment Information
