Overview Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services is a free-standing psychiatric hospital serving adolescents and adults in the Birmingham area. This role is based at Hill Crest with up to 25% time at the AL Clinical School (ACS). The Facilities Maintenance Director/Plant Ops provides direct oversight of Facility Services including Maintenance, Plant Operations, and coordinates Environmental Services, ensuring compliance with Department of Mental Health, JCAHO, CMS, and other regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
Lead and direct Facility Services operations, including Maintenance, Plant Operations, and Environmental Services coordination.
Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards (DMH, JCAHO, CMS, etc.).
Provide leadership in healthcare facility maintenance, with 10+ years of experience as a multi-certified tradesman; engineering or related field degree preferred.
Support safety programs as the facility Safety Officer and chair of the Safety Committee; conduct regular safety inspections and fire drills.
Develop and manage department budgets for Maintenance and Environmental Services; monitor expenditures and forecast costs.
Supervise maintenance staff, coordinate work schedules, provide evaluations, and ensure staff have tools needed to perform duties.
Coordinate annual inspection of fire equipment and oversee building, equipment, and renovation programs.
Maintain documentation for routine checks, preventive maintenance, and Environment of Care Plans.
Assist in repairs and other construction as needed; operate tools and machinery required for building maintenance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field preferred; 10+ years of facility maintenance leadership in a healthcare setting; certification as a healthcare facility manager preferred (or required).
Current driver’s license required.
Specialized Skills and Knowledge
Ability to plan, organize, and achieve objectives; strong leadership and staff motivation skills.
Working knowledge of healthcare sanitation, plant operations, and infection prevention; ability to educate staff on these topics.
Knowledge of JCAHO standards and state regulations related to Life Safety and EOC; ability to communicate implications to staff.
Strong interpersonal communication, independent work capability, and basic computer skills.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
Safety Officer
(approximately 45%): serve as facility Safety Officer, oversee disaster, fire, and safety programs; chair Safety Committee; conduct drills and safety inspections; establish safe operating procedures; investigate hazards and implement corrective actions.
Maintenance/Environmental Services
(approximately 45%): supervise maintenance staff; manage urgent hospital repairs; coordinate Maintenance work schedules; develop and monitor department budgets; schedule fire equipment inspections; perform regular inspections; manage equipment costs and renovations; ensure compliance with Environment of Care Plans; supervise Environmental Service Manager for housekeeping and related duties.
Other Duties
(approximately 5%): perform additional duties as assigned.
