The role provides professional nursing care for patients in an inpatient hospital setting during night shifts. The incumbent has authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for the delivery of nursing care through the use of the nursing process. The RN must accept accountability, apply competent clinical knowledge and skills, and use independent nursing judgment for care provided by self and by health care providers to whom care is delegated to achieve quality patient care outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: ADN, Diploma, BSN or higher degree.
Licensure: Current unencumbered licensure with the WV Board of Registered Professional Nurses or valid multi‑state licensure through the Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
Certification: Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
Experience: Two (2) years of nursing experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Prioritizes patient’s diagnosis, problems, and issues, and mutual goals to meet the needs of the patient and healthcare team.
Serves as a resource for patient & family learning needs.
Coordinates with the interprofessional team to manage changing priorities.
Functions as independent team member to provide safe, quality care for patients.
Mentors colleagues in the acquisition of clinical knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment.
Participates in the development and continuous improvement of systems that support the patient care planning process.
Leads interprofessional teams to collaborate and consult effectively.
Designs innovations to improve outcomes.
Assists other nurses to develop research skills.
Advocates for healthcare consumers rights to inform decision making and self‑determination.
Demonstrates leadership skills within the community/healthcare arena.
Engages the healthcare consumer and other interprofessional team members in holistic, culturally sensitive data collection.
Integrates knowledge from global and environmental factors into the assessment process.
Identifies resources/actions to appropriately address cultural situations.
Recognizes personal bias and disseminates educational findings to colleagues.
Achieves higher level of education/training, demonstrating commitment to lifelong learning.
Identifies appropriate resources for ethical dilemmas and advances ethical nursing practice.
Required competencies include regular charge nursing, precepting new staff or nursing students.
Physical Requirements
Manual patient handling limited to 35 pounds; use lift equipment as indicated.
Must be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, stand, walk, and carry materials weighing 40+ lbs.
Visual acuity within normal range; hearing within normal range required.
Working Environment
Protracted or irregular hours.
Exposure to biohazards and infectious diseases.
Work around deceased patients, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.

No experience required; graduate with diploma, ADN, BSN, or higher.
Level 2:
Meets Level 1 requirements; one year of experience.
Level 3:
Meets Level 2; two years of experience plus one specialty certification; requires charge or precepting experience.
Level 4:
BSN or higher or ADN/diploma with five years experience; one specialty certification; charge/precepting and QI participation required.
Level 5:
MSN or higher with four years experience or BSN with four years and health‑related master’s; one specialty certification; charge/precepting and QI participation required.
Level 6:
MSN or higher with seven or more years experience; one specialty certification; charge/precepting and QI participation at the system level required.
