RN New Graduate Nurse- Abdominal Transplant/Urology/Plastic Surgery Acute Care

Overview
New Graduate RN needed for the Abdominal Transplant/Urology/Plastic Surgery Acute Care Unit at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC. This position is 36 hours/week with day/night and weekend rotation and flexible self-scheduling. It qualifies for an extensive State benefit package. Attaching a resume showing clinical rotations with hours and a cover letter indicating primary area of clinical interest is strongly encouraged.
Unit and Program 5 West is currently accepting applications for February/March 2026 Start Dates.
The Transplant Acute Care Unit is a 15-bed unit caring for patients who require abdominal organ transplantation. Each year, we perform over 125 kidney, pancreas, and liver transplants. Care is also provided to medicine patients awaiting transplantation, offering opportunities to care for patients through pre-transplantation to post-transplantation and recovery.
Our transplant program is certified by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and is a leading team in the region. The Kidney Transplant Team was recently named number one in the United States for one-year survival rates. We focus on improving clinical outcomes through education, research, and clinical practice.
In addition to abdominal transplant, we partner in the care of surgical urology patients. Our team leads North Carolina in robotic surgery and cancer care and we also care for high-risk plastic surgery patients requiring reconstructive grafts and tissue injury-related surgery. These patients have complex wound management needs managed by our expert staff.

Eligibility and Program Details This opportunity is for a new graduate nurse who is in their final semester of nursing school or who has graduated within the past 12 months and has worked as an RN for less than 6 months. Applicants must have an RN license and be able to practice in North Carolina prior to the first day of employment. New Graduate Nurses are part of the UNC Medical Center Residency Program (NRP), a yearlong program supporting the transition from academia to practice for new graduate nurses.

Summary Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting to and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse coordinates and delivers patient care using the nursing process in a hospital setting.
Responsibilities
Education - Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self; attends education programs; uses patient education materials relevant to the patient population; assesses readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers; assesses developmental level of patient and factors affecting ability to learn.
Evaluation of Care - Identifies expected patient outcomes; seeks guidance as needed in revision of the plan of care; participates in discussions with the interdisciplinary team on evaluation of patient care; communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
Implementation - Demonstrates competence in care of patients with complex problems, including physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety aspects; performs bedside point-of-care testing as required; uses organizational nursing standards, policies, and procedures; organizes and prioritizes care; consults with resources for complex issues and discharge planning.
Leadership - Develops goals to promote professional growth; works toward achieving goals within time frames; facilitates intra/interdepartmental collaboration; participates in unit goals and performance improvement; communicates effectively; promotes cost-effective care; provides feedback to co-workers; is aware of regulatory guidelines and public policy; promotes a safe hospital environment.
Patient Assessment - Recognizes data from complex situations to determine care priorities; assesses physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs; synthesizes data and communicates to others; assesses and plans for discharge needs and builds relationships with families to support advocacy.
Planning - Collaborates with patient/family to update the plan of care; utilizes multidisciplinary resources; communicates planning; addresses cultural and ethnic considerations; prioritizes tasks for patients with complex problems.
Research - Reads relevant journals and brings ideas/questions to staff for assessment of applicability.
Other Information Education Requirements:
Graduation from a school of professional nursing.
If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment and obtain a Bachelor's degree in Nursing or a Master's degree in Nursing within seven years of employment date.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the start of clinical care.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.
Professional Experience Requirements:
No prior experience required.
