Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
is responsible for all aspects of system design, from concept development to detailed drawings, build support, and installation. Day-to-day responsibilities include mechanical design, drawing package creation, build and debug support, process improvement, and startup of industrial automation systems. This position requires strong technical expertise in automation and mechanical design, as well as hands-on involvement throughout the project lifecycle. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with project managers, programmers, and cross-functional teams to deliver efficient, high-quality automation systems for Adaptec Solutions customers. Key Responsibilities Create mechanical assembly and component designs for automated systems, including robotics and material handling. Translate customer documentation and requirements into detailed mechanical design plans and designable work packages. Develop and maintain detailed drawing packages and bills of materials (BOMs). Perform tolerance stack-ups, GD&T, and engineering analyses, including FEA and hand calculations. Research and source components; obtain vendor quotes and specifications. Collaborate with project managers, PLC programmers, and robot programmers to ensure complete system integration. Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and customer meetings. Support build, debug, installation, and system startup activities. Facilitate transfer of designs to fabrication and assembly. Apply Lean Six Sigma and Design for Manufacturability principles to improve system performance and reliability. Stay current with emerging automation and robotics technologies. Promote engineering solutions that meet both technical and budgetary requirements. Serve as project Technical Lead when assigned. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in
Mechanical Engineering
required (candidates with 10+ years of directly related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree). Minimum
7 years of experience
in automation design, machine tool design, or upgrading existing automation systems. Subject Matter Expertise in conveyors, material handling, palletizing (including bag palletizing), forging, and end-of-line packaging is preferred. Strong CAD and BOM management experience. Proficiency in
SolidWorks
preferred; experience with
Inventor
or
Creo
accepted. Familiarity with
FEA
and hand calculations in structural analysis. Experience with fabrication and assembly processes. Knowledge of materials, manufacturing methods, and mechanical design principles. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Hands-on approach; comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities. Willingness to travel occasionally for customer support. Performance Metrics Completion of design projects within budget and schedule targets. Rework due to design errors maintained at or below target levels. Strong peer recognition and collaboration.
