Overview
This position provides bedded outpatient Substance Abuse and Mental Health Treatment to patients in the HMHI Adult Receiving Center. This role will prescribe medications and provide short-term treatment for SUD/mental health disorders within the scope of practice and state law. The Adult Receiving Center at Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) assists individuals in crisis 24/7, supported by a team of mental health professionals to provide care and connect patients with community resources. Interventions are short, highly intensive, and aimed at resolving mental health crises with minimal restrictions and lower costs associated with unnecessary inpatient care. Care is individualized to each patient’s needs, including crisis evaluation, psychiatric assessment, medication management as needed, solution-focused therapy, peer support, case management, and recommendations for next steps and ongoing support. Crisis observation may be required for up to 23 hours.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions: Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians. Performs physical examinations. Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, imaging studies, and other diagnostic procedures. Orders and supervises the administration of blood products. Arrives at tentative diagnoses of medical, surgical, and other conditions. Develops treatment plans in conjunction with the attending physician to provide optimal patient medical management. Participates in continuing medical education, including specialty and sub-specialty meetings, clubs, boards, and conferences. Assists in data collection for research projects. Orders consultations and collaborates with other specialty medical teams. Participates in special projects and committee functions. Problem Solving: Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above. Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served. Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of patients on the assigned unit. Knowledge of life-span growth and development and ability to assess data and provide care per department policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Required Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant from the State of Utah. Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential must be obtained within 30 days of hire. Preferred Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by the department or privileging criteria. This position is patient-sensitive and requires immunization according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be available for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
