Surgical Technologist I - Operating Room
- Hillsborough Hospital Campus
Hillsborough Services: General Surgery, GYN, Urology, XI & SI Robot, Orthopedics: Total joints (hips, knees, shoulders), Sports Ortho, Neuro & Orthopedic Spine, Ophthalmology & GIHBR. OR has 8 rooms running from 7a-5:30p, with 3 late rooms until 7:30pm. All other hours are covered by call time. Hours: 40 hr/wk. Days with call and holiday requirements. UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus is a community hospital which is an extension of UNC Medical Center focusing on elective surgical programs. The 163-bed facility combines a community hospital culture with the innovative procedures and care UNC Medical Center is known for. The Hillsborough Hospital has accreditation for Total Hip and Knee Replacement and is Dementia Friendly. The campus has received the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for Patient Experience and ranks in the top five percent in the nation for patient experience. Summary The Surgical Technologist I works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in sterile and aseptic technique and combine knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive procedures. Has baseline knowledge and ability to perform duties of surgical scrub at the entity they serve.
Responsibilities
Performs technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring proper technical practices are used per accepted standards.
Maintains, assembles, handles, and sterilizes specialty instrumentation.
Follows aseptic technique; identifies contamination or breaks in aseptic technique and implements corrective actions.
Performs surgical counts; follows policies for discrepancies and reports accordingly.
Labels drugs and solutions; monitors quantities used.
Assists in identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
Plans and sets up instruments, supplies, and drapes to optimize accessibility during procedures.
Assists the surgeon with understanding patient anatomy and abnormalities affecting the procedure.
Assists in case selection and planning of instrument needs.
Adapts scrubbing procedures as needed and communicates with the surgical team; responds to emergencies per hospital plans.
Inventory, receives, and stores supplies under Surgical Services leadership.
Identifies and reports defective instruments, supplies, and equipment; assists with restocking operating/procedure rooms.
Assists the registered nurse during the intraoperative phase of nursing practice.
Operates complex equipment and troubleshoots as necessary; mentors Surgical Technician Trainees and may serve as a preceptor.
Other Information Education Requirements:
None required as long as other position qualifications are met.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider; graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program; or graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or formal education/training may substitute for 3+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech.

0-3 years
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Successful completion of service-specific portion of UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies; strong communication and customer service; excellent organizational and priority-setting skills.
