Surgical Technologist I - Operating Room - Hillsborough Hospital Campus Hillsborough Services: General Surgery, GYN, Urology, XI & SI Robot, Orthopedics: Total joints (hips, knees, shoulders), Sports Orthopaedics, Neuro & Orthopedic Spine, Ophthalmology & GIHBR. OR has 8 rooms operating from 7a-5:30p, with 3 late rooms until 7:30pm. All other hours are covered by call time. Hours: 40 hr/wk. Days with call and holiday requirements. UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus is a community hospital which is an extension of UNC Medical Center focusing on elective surgical programs. The 163-bed facility combines a community hospital culture with innovative procedures and care. The Surgical Technologist I works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in sterile and aseptic technique and apply knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and relevant tools to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive procedures. Has baseline knowledge and ability to perform duties of surgical scrub at the entity they serve. Responsibilities

Performs technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring proper technical practices per accepted standards. Maintains, assembles, handles, and sterilizes specialty instrumentation. Follows aseptic technique; proactively identifies contamination or breaks in aseptic technique and implements corrective actions. Performs surgical counts; follows policies for incorrect counts and reports discrepancies. Labels drugs and solutions; monitors quantities used. Assists in proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens. Assists with planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes for optimal accessibility. Assists the surgeon, understanding patient anatomy and abnormalities affecting the procedure. Assists in case selection and instrument planning. Adapts scrubbing procedures based on case information and communicates with the team; responds to emergencies per hospital plans. Inventories, receives, and stores supplies under Surgical Services leadership. Identifies and reports defective instruments and equipment; assists with restocking rooms. Assists the registered nurse during intraoperative nursing practice. Operates complex equipment in the OR and troubleshoots as needed. Serves as a mentor/preceptor for Surgical Technician Trainees as needed. Other Information

None required if other position qualifications are met. Licensure/Certification Requirements:

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider; graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or formal education/training may be substituted for 3+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech.
