University of Iowa Health Care Department of Perioperative Services is seeking a Surgical Technologist II to assist with surgical procedures and provide therapeutic, preventive, and emergency patient care duties. Responsibilities include preparing, operating, and maintaining routine and complex equipment, instruments, supplies and implants. All duties are performed under the direction of a registered professional nurse. Available Units

General Surgery Duties to Include
Prepares the surgical area for patient care and anticipates the needs of the surgical team Serves as primary preceptor for Surgical Technology students, Summer 10 Nursing Interns, or new staff Participates in shared governance committees, POD committee, or EBP workgroup Applies knowledge related to emergency situations and surgical procedures in the operating room Maintains principles of medical and surgical asepsis; communicates breaks in aseptic technique Provides for proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies and implants (E/I/S/I) Understands various surgical equipment and advanced instrumentation to anticipate needs during surgery and improve workflow Performs delegated technical functions and clinical activities in accordance with institutional policies Facilitates patient care considering the patient’s condition and age Collaborates with peers to maintain the sterile field and report incidents to the surgeon Reviews pertinent patient information for procedure readiness and related factors Assists with revising or updating care plans for new procedures or surgeons Organizes and reviews instrument trays and supply shelves Organizes and maintains trial or specialty equipment, supplies, or instruments Displays critical thinking and anticipates patient and surgeon needs Takes preventative action on potential patient problems/complications and reports unusual incidents Documents according to department/division standards with the Registered Nurse Performs computer functions within the scope of role as defined by supported units Precepts new staff and/or student technologists in scrubbing duties; mentors new employees and team members Practices standard precautions in infection control per institutional policy Follows changes in patient care protocol based on research findings Participates in unit staff meetings and in-service programs Contributes to perioperative initiatives or shared governance Performs other special projects and tasks as assigned Ensures daily unit documentation, such as case reviews for procedures, implants and supplies Communicates with surgeons regarding implants, instruments or supplies for future cases Organizes/revises specialty carts, care plans or service line information Organizes and provides specialty in-services Percent of Time, Schedule, and Location
Percent of Time:
80-100% Schedule:
Rotating 8, 10-, and 12-hour shifts with occasional weekends, additional on-call shifts, and holiday rotation. Location:

Required Qualifications: Satisfactory completion of a vocational or military course in surgical technology, or certification as a surgical technologist (NBSTSA and NCCT). Two years’ experience as a Surgical Technologist Desired Qualifications: Preferred candidates will have direct patient care experience in an operating room. Experience working in a health care environment. Able to scrub surgical procedures. Strong written communication skills. Application and Additional Information
