Overview

We have been retained by a global leader in mining technology to identify a Systems Engineer (Algorithm and Modelling) for their U.S. hub in San Luis Obispo. This role is central to the development of next-generation instruments that integrate advanced electronics and sensors into rugged, field-ready mechanical systems. The Systems Engineer will be responsible for evaluating academic and technical literature, developing mathematical models, and validating algorithms related to sensor calibration, sensor fusion, inductive sensing, and system performance. We are looking for an individual who thrives at the crossroads of theory and practice, enjoys rolling up their sleeves in the technology playground, and is eager to help shape resilient, production-ready systems. Responsibilities

Conduct technical research and analysis by reviewing scientific literature, patents, and white papers to derive actionable implementation strategies aligned with the product development roadmap. Contribute to the sensor selection process for new product development, including evaluation of performance specifications, integration feasibility, and alignment with system-level requirements. Develop and validate mathematical models using tools such as Scilab, Mathematica, and Python to support algorithm and system design. Perform simulation-based verification and robustness testing to assess algorithm performance under a range of operating conditions. Translate validated models into clear, software-ready deliverables, including requirements, acceptance criteria, and unit test strategies. Collaborate cross-functionally with software and firmware engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of algorithms into embedded platforms. Maintain thorough and organized documentation of design decisions, modelling assumptions, simulation setups, and performance outcomes. Support root cause analysis and resolution of production performance issues, including calibration-related failures, to drive continuous improvement in product quality and reliability. Requirements

Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Control Systems, Mechatronics, or a related discipline. Minimum 3 years of experience in algorithm development, modelling, or systems analysis. Proven experience in developing and validating mathematical models for real-world applications, including successful deployment in field environments. Demonstrated ability to translate theoretical research into practical, product-focused solutions, with a strong foundation in identifying, evaluating, and applying emerging technologies to solve engineering challenges. Proficiency in MATLAB/Scilab/Simulink, Mathematica, or Python for algorithm development and analysis. Familiarity with implementation in C++, Python, .NET or Java production environments. Experience applying Monte Carlo simulation techniques to develop error models, quantify uncertainty, and establish performance bounds for complex systems. Hands-on expertise in calibration and characterization of MEMS-based inertial sensors, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers, for improved accuracy and stability. Seniority level
