Overview The Refrigeration Engineer will partner closely with new systems, compliance and service teams to design and deliver high‑caliber refrigeration solutions for all of KELVIN’s customers.
Key Responsibilities
Play a key role in proposal, bid development, design and installation for industrial ammonia/central refrigeration, commercial split systems, and HVAC processes for industrial or commercial applications
Assist in the coordination and management of tasks for active projects
Responsible for initial project coordination and handoff to project management
Review submittal drawings and data for compliance with design intent and/or contract documents
Review engineering drawings and designs to ensure adherence to established specifications, scope of work and standards specified by each project/client
Field measure existing facilities, as needed, and develop drawings for system installations
Create sketches and related design documents to complete the required refrigeration system and accommodate customer expectations
Assist/direct CAD Coordinator in producing 2D and 3D CAD/BIM drawings and document sets from sketches, existing drawings, equipment shop drawings and standard details for refrigeration, HVAC, piping and controls systems to be estimated, installed and/or fabricated
Layout and dimensioning of equipment locations, pipe and ductwork routing, and support systems to eliminate interferences with other components, existing systems, or other building elements, accommodate servicing requirement, and maximize system installation efficiency
Assist/direct CAD Coordinator in producing accurate “As‑Built” drawings from field mark‑ups upon completion of a construction project
Coordinate and consult with others on design, layout and/or detail components and systems to resolve design issues or installation constraints
Perform load calculations to determine the refrigeration requirements of the facilities
Perform heat transfer and thermodynamic analysis associated with sizing and selection of refrigeration equipment, piping, and control valves
Ventilation systems design and sizing including fans, louvers, dampers, ductwork, etc.
Relief Valve Calculations
Develop P&ID’s, flow diagrams, plans and specifications for refrigeration systems
Writing and continuous improvement of specifications and standards pertaining to refrigeration including piping, vessels, compressors, evaporators, condensers, valves, instrumentation, corrosion protection, and insulation
Collaborate closely with company resources to ensure projects meet technical and quality requirements
Stay abreast of codes and regulations as they apply to industrial and commercial refrigeration and HVAC
Qualifications and Leadership
BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited school
Current PE certification preferred; minimum 5 years of engineering experience in industrial refrigeration systems is required. If not, candidate must possess the ability, desire and drive to accomplish such.
Demonstrated technical understanding of refrigeration
Proficiency in drafting/design programs, e.g., CAD and Microsoft Office applications, i.e., Outlook, Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint, etc.
Basic to advanced knowledge of drafting programs
Ability to read, analyze and interpret construction drawings and P&ID’s
Skill in writing reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals
Experience in all aspects of project requirements including mechanical, electrical, and structural, including application of current codes
Knowledge of construction equipment and techniques, drawings, and specifications
Knowledge of building materials, engineering standards and codes
Ability to work closely with others on a team as well as independently
Physical ability to access job sites, including some climbing and crawling
Capable of maintaining a high energy level to manage a dynamic, fast‑paced workload
Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills in evaluating situations
A high level of technical and spatial aptitude
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines
Self‑motivation and willingness to learn and embrace new ideas and technologies
