Overview
Rail Vehicle Engineer
at Valley Metro RPTA. The role is responsible for all operational, maintenance, configuration, and technical aspects of Valley Metro’s rail vehicles and related support equipment. Serves as the technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Rail Rolling Stock in support of Rail Maintenance and Management. Responsibilities
Supports a 24/7 operation that includes prioritizing work assignments, responding to emergencies, and providing technical guidance to rail maintenance. Possesses significant knowledge of rail vehicle design and maintenance and recommends vehicle improvements based on sound engineering practices. Develops specifications for replacement systems, circuits, and/or parts; manages large capital programs including procurement of New LRVs. Ensures designs comply with design criteria, specifications, and applicable standards (Federal, State, industry standards such as AAR, APTA, FRA, FTA, NFPA, ISO, IEEE, ASME, NEC, EN, DIN, IEC, etc.). Performs administrative and technical tasks in support of procurements, including specification development, prototyping, design review, first article inspections, systems integration, QA/QC, safety certification, testing, and warranty support. Develops data-driven maintenance, training, and material support programs for new LRVs and subsystems. Directs and participates in troubleshooting railcars and upgrades diagnostic capabilities of the workforce. Collaborates with Asset Management to support ongoing maintenance and new rail assets. Develops training programs for maintenance staff on diagnostic, repair, and maintenance of advanced electronic systems; conducts training as needed with new equipment or personnel. Communicates organizational goals clearly to internal and external stakeholders and keeps relevant parties informed. Ensures compliance with policies, regulations, and laws; stays current with regulatory developments affecting area of responsibility. Develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for effective maintenance and management of the rail vehicle fleet. Meets with management, staff, and contractors to obtain and provide information related to rail vehicle design and maintenance. Maintains knowledge of new and emerging technologies. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering 5 years of experience in the rail rolling stock industry Strong leadership and written and verbal communication skills Proficient with Microsoft Office Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential duties Highly Desired Experience
Experience in public transportation Experience in project management Light Rail Vehicle maintenance experience Experience with training and curriculum development Developing specifications for rail vehicles and related equipment Experience with all aspects of rail vehicle procurements Other Requirements
Position requires qualification to operate Rail Vehicles and the ability to pass Rail Vehicle Operator Safety Training Medical Examination: Employment for safety-sensitive positions contingent on physical examination and drug screen Background Investigation: Employment contingent on background check Licenses and Certifications: Valid Arizona Driver’s License
