JOB PURPOSE: Serves as a member of a surgical service line team by assisting in management of postoperative and critically ill patients in the hospital, as well as evaluating pre- and post-operative patients in the office setting. Applies specialized skills and knowledge related to the care of patients in the CVOR, ICU, CCU and CVICU areas. Contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, consulting and provides leadership to the organization.
Responsibilities
Provides direct clinical services for pre-operative and post-operative patients, within institutional guidelines and utilizing evidence-based clinical practice standards under the supervision of the patient\'s physician.
Obtains patient health histories and complete physical examinations and documents findings in accordance with hospital requirements.
Orders appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests, explaining the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedures to patients, families, staff, and healthcare learners.
Performs approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based on the patient\'s clinical status and documents procedures in accordance with hospital requirements, including arterial, venous, and capillary blood sampling; urine and sputum samples; hemodynamic measurements and EKGs; assisting with radiographic studies; and assisting the physician with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and external cardiac massage; airway management including bag and mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation and extubation; administration of life-supporting drugs; and defibrillation according to Advanced Cardiac Life Support standards.
Under physician direction and within credentialing standards, manages arterial catheters, central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters, temporary pacemakers, intra-aortic balloon pump catheters and chest tube placement, management, and removal.
Interfaces with patients using monitoring and instrumentation equipment and educates others in performing the same functions.
Formulates and implements a treatment plan for acute illness management in collaboration with the supervising physician and/or attending back-up physicians; documents in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries.
Assesses patients for changes in status and initiates appropriate interventions, including emergency interventions to stabilize the patient.
Incorporates clinical research findings in the development and implementation of standards of care.
Supports IRB-approved clinical research/trials through activities including obtaining consent, ordering diagnostic tests, recording results, administering interventions, and documenting outcomes and adverse events.
Participates in pre-, peri-, and postoperative management of surgical patients in the OR and ICUs, including minimally invasive vein harvest, thoracoscopy, and robotic-assisted surgeries.
Engages in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research; serves as a clinical expert and education consultant to nursing staff, healthcare teams, and the community.
Identifies educational needs of families and participates in teaching opportunities; assesses educational needs and develops, provides, and evaluates educational programs for nursing staff, interdisciplinary teams, and the community.

Ability to work as a team member and communicate effectively in writing and verbally with team members and patients.
Ability to handle multiple priorities and deadlines.
Understanding of legal issues influencing the practice of extenders.
Ability to lead a team with professional demeanor and build effective relationships within and outside PHC.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations with limited standardization.
Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry.
Qualifications Minimum Education Required: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with a current Georgia license for Advanced Practice Nursing and a Master\'s degree in Nursing, OR graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program with a current license for the Georgia State Composite Board.
Minimum Experience Required: None.
Minimum Licensure/Certification Required By Law: Licensed Physician Assistant in the State of Georgia, OR Licensed for Advanced Practice Nursing (ACNP, FNP, WHNP).
