Overview

As the leader of the health care team, the Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care, utilizing the nursing process in accordance with established standards of care, policies, and procedures. Demonstrates performance consistent with the Medical Center Vision, Mission, and Strategic Plan of the organization. Remains flexible to changing systems; demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice; and treats co-workers, patients, families, and all members of the health care team with dignity and respect. Essential Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse demonstrates proficiency by exhibiting the following skills, competencies, and behaviors: Leadership

Nursing Process

Develops and contributes to the individualized plan of care reflecting assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating outcomes. Ensures plan includes multidisciplinary planning, consultation, and education. Ensures plan reflects admission or outpatient data, ongoing findings, age-appropriate care, cultural needs, and appropriate acuity. Ensures plan is discussed with patient, family/significant others, and completed in a timely manner. Monitors patient progress based on the plan. Revises plan on an ongoing basis based on patient condition and progress evaluation. Ensures care meets standards of practice. Ensures effective development and completion of discharge planning, including addressing discharge barriers and patient/family education. Ensures patient safety with medications and procedures, including five rights; falls prevention; decubitus prevention; and nosocomial infection prevention. Ensures optimal pain control and patient comfort; identifies and addresses patient anxieties, fears, or concerns. Ensures patient understands medication purpose, side effects, and administration instructions during hospitalization and at discharge. Documentation

Charting is accurate, legible, dated, and timed. Documentation reflects nursing process, interventions, and evaluations. Utilizes computer systems effectively for optimal patient care. Clinical Outcomes

Discusses patient findings and progress toward outcomes with physicians and other health care team members. Demonstrates competencies during the probationary period and ongoing departmental competency validation. Makes comprehensive nursing decisions based on data interpretation and evaluation of patient outcomes. Participates in departmental performance improvement activities (planning, measuring/monitoring, assessing, and improving). Workplace Safety

Adheres to workplace safety principles and practices; applies standard precautions; maintains a safe environment for self and others. Patient Care Experience

Practices customer service standards as defined by the Service Area, Medical Center, and department. Responds promptly to call lights, alarms, and patient requests. Makes appropriate referrals and assists patients in utilizing resources. Maintains patient confidentiality and a clean, orderly, and functional work environment. Treats all families with courtesy, respect, kindness, and compassion. Provides an optimal patient care experience by actively listening to patient and family needs and ensuring understanding of discharge instructions and care plans. Team Commitment

Fiscal Responsibility

Organizes work to minimize overtime. Identifies and assists in systems improvements that simplify or correct processes. Utilizes payroll and non-payroll resources efficiently.

Experience

Basic Qualifications:

One (1) year recent (within the last three (3) years) full-time equivalent experience in Level III NICU or successful completion of KP Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) course or approved equivalent within prior 12 months. Education

Registered Nurse License (California) Basic Life Support Neonatal Resuscitation Program Additional Requirements

May be expected to cross-train to at least one other Perinatal area. Notes

If twelve (12) hour option chosen, shift will be 7:15 pm - 7:45 am with an 8-hour back up shift 11:15 pm - 7:45 am.
