Overview
Surgical Technology - Lab Instructor (Non-Instructional) Faculty deliver approved curriculum, content, and assessments in an applied learning environment. Responsibilities include facilitation of activities and discussions that engage a range of learning styles with targeted guidance and mentorship to students. Faculty will also interpret and administer assessments, and offer constructive feedback to support student growth and learning outcomes. A key part of the role is to integrate technology effectively to enrich the educational experiences. Faculty act as ambassadors for their programs and TSTC. Responsibilities
Assist instructors during lab sessions with activities and hands-on demonstrations. Observe students during skills practice and assist with hands-on guidance in the lab. Assemble instrument trays and practice materials for student use in the lab. Set up and break down surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies for lab sessions. Support student learning by tutoring students needing additional assistance in mastering technical skills. Provide constructive feedback and encourage student confidence in the lab setting. Grade papers, exercises, and tests by use of predetermined objective criteria. Assist in maintaining documentation of student lab competencies and student files. Maintain inventory of lab supplies and equipment and assure replenishment as needed. Ensure all equipment is functioning properly and maintained according to safety standards. Monitor instructional areas for safety conditions. Operate motor vehicles for the purpose of conducting TSTC business. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Effective in teaching and delivering high quality instruction Knowledge of the curriculum with documented experience in various surgical specialties; experience with the use of technology (e.g., robotics) used in the operating room Effective organization and time management, effective communication and teamwork Demonstrated ability in perioperative patient care through selection, inspection, and opening of surgical supplies and equipment in a timely manner for various age groups Demonstrates ability to create and maintain a sterile field with essential surgical supplies and equipment Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts at proper intervals according to hospital policy Performs surgical hand scrubs and gowning Cleans and prepares surgical instruments for terminal sterilization Completes written lab and clinical performance evaluation forms in a timely manner Certified Surgical Technologist, BLS certification Flexibility to support evening, weekend, or summer assignments as appropriate Preferred: teaching experience in surgical technology; Bachelor’s degree in allied health; minimum of 5 years of OR experience Ability to lecture on content regarding various surgical procedures Organize and prioritize perioperative tasks based on identified need Demonstrates competency to operate surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment Demonstrates proficiency and independence; anticipates surgeon’s needs during student lab experiences Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician as authorized by CBSPD/IAHCSMM Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology from an accredited program (ARC/STSA accreditation preferred).
